Improving clinical case formulation in developmental psychopathology
Existential–Humanistic and Relational Psychotherapy During Covid-19 With Patients With Preexisting Medical Conditions
Unexpected traumatic events, including life-threatening medical conditions, brain injuries, and pandemics, can be catalysts for patients and clinicians to consider existential issues, including meaning in life. The existential–humanistic and relational perspectives on therapeutic interventions emphasize creating meaning, taking responsibility for one’s own life and self-narratives, choosing and actualizing ways of being in the world that are cons…
Construct validity of the Psychodiagnostic Chart
The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM; Alliance of Psychoanalytic Organizations [APO], 2006) was developed to add a contrasting, person-centered perspective to the conceptualization and diagnosis of psychological dysfunction in traditional diagnostic systems (i.e., the International Classification of Diseases, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). In addition to considering symptom patterns (Axis S), the PDM—and its recen…
Bonnaroo Is My Classroom
Take two dozen students to the 4 day, outdoor ‘Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival’ along with 73,000 people. Have them produce 18 live concerts in 4 days, then you can say, ‘Bonnaroo is my classroom.’ This article describes how it was done
The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual Version 2 (PDM-2)
This article reviews the development of the second edition of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, the PDM-2. We begin by placing the PDM in historical context, describing the structure and goals of the first edition of the manual, and reviewing some initial responses to the PDM within the professional community. We then outline 5 guiding principles intended to maximize the clinical utility and heuristic value of PDM-2, and we delineate strategie…

The Two-Minute Check-in at the Beginning of Psychoanalytic Group Therapy Sessions
A check-in at the beginning of supportive and symptom-focused groups is common. However, it has not been part of psychoanalytic groups which centre on the unconscious determinates of symptoms. The purpose of the two-minute check-in in a psychoanalytic group is to gain information on each member's state of mind, help the group decide where it wants to focus its attention during the session, to balance the member's participation (so that talkative …

False Assumptions about Psychopathology, Hysteria and the MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical Scales
The MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical scales rest on the common behavioral assumption that consistent items can be added to assess all psychopathologies. This may be the case for some unitary symptoms such as anxiety or anger, but not for complex diagnostic conditions such as Hysteria, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder. These are better understood with a psychodynamic formulation. Psychodynamic theory assumes that int…
Characteristics of Successful Fakers versus Unsuccessful Fakers
Moyer, Burkhardt, and Gordon found in 2002 that some individuals could fake PTSD on the MMPI-2. In light of these results, a follow-up study was conducted to assess whether attributes such as empathy, intelligence, subjectivity, or insightfulness influenced ability to fake a PTSD profile on the MMPI-2. 35 subjects from the previous study were divided into two groups, successful fakers and unsuccessful fakers. Analysis indicated no significant dif…

Theories of Theories of Mind
Theories of Theories of Mind brings together contributions by a distinguished international team of philosophers, psychologists, and primatologists, who between them address such questions as: what is it to understand the thoughts, feelings, and intentions of other people? How does such an understanding develop in the normal child? Why, unusually, does it fail to develop? And is any such mentalistic understanding shared by members of other specie…

Out to Pasture
The emergence of new adult guardianship and related legislation and systems in British Columbia, Ontario, and other jurisdictions has generated questions about the utility of separate mental health legislation. Mental health statutes are the descendents of legislation that once created and regulated separate institutions and systems for the insane (later known as the mentally diseased and, more recently, the mentally ill). Such legislation is no …

Folk Psychology as Simulation
The Passivity of Emotions
A number of philosophers object to traditional classification of fear, joy, jealousy, embarrassment, and like-collectively, the -as passions: ways, or products of ways, of being acted on. For it is thought that if emotions are passions, then a proper attitude toward them would be one of helplessness and fatalistic resignation. If emotions are passions, then, according to some, we are not responsible for them. Edward Sankowski expresses view succi…

Reliability Study of the Defense Mechanism Inventory
Aims of this study are to replicate and elucidate reliability characteristics of the Defense Mechanism Inventory (Gleser & Ihilevich, 1969). College students (Men = 47, Women = 47) were administered the Defense Mechanism Inventory on two occasions separated by a 17-day interval. Whereas test-retest reliabilities for both the total and the women approximated the ranges reported by Gleser and Ihilevich (1969), the range of correlations for the men …
Changes in Self-Regard, Creativity and Interpersonal Behavior as a Function of Audio-Tape Encounter-Group Experiences
This research examined the effects of self-directed audio-tape encounter-group experiences on dimensions of self/ideal-self-congruence, creativity and interpersonal need fulfillment. The Semantic Differential, Barron-Welsh Art Scale and the FIRO-B were administered to groups of college students. The audio-tape procedure was effective and results supported the hypotheses which predicted that encounter relative to control Ss would achieve a higher …
