The ancient city of Gonur founded in the basin of the ancient river delta of the Murghab appears to be the original political capital of the land of Margush, which is mentioned in the Bisitun inscription of Darius. The land of Margush (ancient Margiana) was situated in the east of present day Turkmenistan and owed its origin partly to the migration of people from the far West. Painted clay sculptures hold an important place amongst the finds from Nisa.
