From Scaling Interventions to Tuning Systems
Psychosocial problems, daily functioning and help-seeking behaviour of international migrant workers in the Netherlands
International migrant workers (IMWs) may face insecure work and housing, limited access to healthcare and increased risk of psychological problems. Two scalable, evidence-based interventions to support individuals experiencing psychological distress are Doing What Matters in Times of Stress (DWM) and Problem Management Plus (PM+). This study aimed to explore IMWs’ problems, daily functioning and help-seeking behaviour, to inform cultural adaptati…
Mental health needs and implementation barriers for psychosocial support among forcibly displaced Ukrainians in Poland, Romania, and Slovakia
These findings highlight urgent, multidimensional needs for Ukrainian FDPs and contribute to developing sustainable mental health support strategies for displaced populations affected by armed conflict or forced displacement
Differences in Personal Recovery Among Individuals with Severe Mental Disorders in Private and Supported Accommodations
People with severe mental disorders (SMD) face long-term functional impairments requiring integrated, community-based, recovery-oriented care. Italy provides two main housing models for people with SMD: private accommodation (PA) and supported accommodation (SA). This exploratory study investigated differences in recovery outcomes across these settings using the Mental Health Recovery Star (MHRS). A six-month longitudinal study was conducted with…
Context, implementation and mechanisms of impact of a stepped-care WHO psychological intervention for migrants with psychological distress
Migrants often experience psychological distress due to pre-, peri- and post-migration stressors. Scalable interventions like Doing What Matters in Times of Stress (DWM) and Problem Management Plus (PM+) have been developed to address these challenges. This study evaluates a stepped-care program combining DWM and PM+ for migrants in Italy, examining its context, implementation, and mechanisms of impact. A mixed-methods process evaluation was cond…
Community case study for surveillance and early case-detection of Sars-CoV-2 infections across high-risk key populations
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, an ad hoc organisational framework was established between academic, local government and community partners to implement the “Sentinella – Identify, Trace and Prevent” screening programme in Verona, north-east Italy. Between September 2020 and May 2021, key populations not covered by any screening policies at the local and national level were screened for SARS-CoV-2. Target populations were: older adult…
Core outcome sets for trials of interventions to prevent and to treat multimorbidity in adults in low and middle-income countries
INTRODUCTION: The burden of multimorbidity is recognised increasingly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), creating a strong emphasis on the need for effective evidence-based interventions. Core outcome sets (COS) appropriate for the study of multimorbidity in LMICs do not presently exist. These are required to standardise reporting and contribute to a consistent and cohesive evidence-base to inform policy and practice. We describe the de…
Mapping the evidence on psychosocial interventions for migrant populations
Migrant mental health is a pressing public health issue with wide-ranging implications. Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted in this population to assess the effects of psychosocial interventions. However, the available evidence is characterized by controversy and fragmentation, with studies focusing on different migrant populations, interventions, outcomes, delivery modalities and settings. Aiming to promote systematic re…
Assessing local service providers’ needs for scaling up MHPSS interventions for Ukrainian refugees
Providing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support interventions (MHPSS) for forcibly displaced Ukrainians in Central and Eastern Europe poses numerous challenges due to various socio-cultural and infrastructural factors. This qualitative study explored implementation barriers reported by service providers of in-person and digital MHPSS for Ukrainian refugees displaced to Poland, Romania and Slovakia due to the war. In addition, the study aimed to …
A systematic review of Clinical Practice Guidelines for the development of the WHO's Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation
Effectiveness of a stepped-care programme of WHO psychological interventions in migrant populations resettled in Italy
ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier: NCT04993534
Risk factors for mental disorder development in asylum seekers and refugees resettled in Western Europe and Turkey
Background: In asylum seekers and refugees, the frequency of mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, is higher than the general population, but there is a lack of data on risk factors for the development of mental disorders in this population. Aim: This study investigated the risk factors for mental disorder development in a large group of asylum seekers and refugees resettled in high- and middle-income s…

Psychiatrists’ attitudes towards functional neurological disorders
The present study highlights that a psychogenetic view of FND dominates among Italian psychiatrists. This could be due to out-of-date knowledge about the pathophysiology of this group of disorders. Promoting education about novel approaches to FND would be of crucial importance to improving care for patients suffering from this condition
Addressing mental health problems among persons without stable housing in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic
this randomised trial has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov under the number NCT05033210
A Practical Framework for Academics to Implement Public Engagement Interventions and Measure Their Impact
Academic institutions have shown an increased interest in the so-called third mission to offer an impactful contribution to society. Indeed, public engagement programs ensure knowledge transfer and help to inspire positive public discourse. We aimed to propose a comprehensive framework for academic institutions planning to implement a public engagement intervention and to suggest potential indicators to measure its impact. To inform the framework…
A network meta-analysis of psychosocial interventions for refugees and asylum seekers with PTSD
INTRODUCTION: Refugees and asylum seekers are vulnerable to common mental disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Using a network meta-analysis (NMA) approach, the present systematic review compared and ranked psychosocial interventions for the treatment of PTSD in adult refugees and asylum seekers. METHODS: Randomised studies of psychosocial interventions for adult refugees and asylum seekers with PTSD were systematically ide…
The Role of Attitudes Toward Medication and Treatment Adherence in the Clinical Response to LAIs
Background: Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are efficacious in managing psychotic symptoms in people affected by severe mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The present study aimed to investigate whether attitude toward treatment and treatment adherence represent predictors of symptoms changes over time. Methods: The STAR Network "Depot Study" was a naturalistic, multicenter, observational, prospective study t…

Common mental disorders in asylum seekers and refugees
BACKGROUND: In recent years there has been a progressive rise in the number of asylum seekers and refugees displaced from their country of origin, with significant social, economic, humanitarian and public health implications. In this population, up-to-date information on the rate and characteristics of mental health conditions, and on interventions that can be implemented once mental disorders have been identified, are needed. This umbrella revi…

Thirtieth birthday of the Italian psychiatric reform
In 2008 Italian psychiatry celebrates 30 years since the passing of Italian Law Number 180, the reform law that marked the phasing out of psychiatric hospitals and the gradual development of a community-based system of psychiatric care. After 30 years of implementation, Law 180 is still unique in the international scenario, considering that Italy remains the only country in the world where traditional mental hospitals are outside of the law. Ital…
