  • Relics, oaths and politics in thirteenth-century Siam

    Open Access•D Wyatt, David K Wyatt•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2001•Citada por: 6

Recent efforts have re-dated the Wat Bang Sanuk inscription to 1219, long before the Ram Khamhaeng inscription of 1292. Attempts to assess the implications force a re-thinking of Thai rebellion against Angkor by linking rebellion to religious thought, including especially the discovery and public show of relics of the Buddha

  • Confronting the World and Each Other

    Open Access•D Wyatt, David K Wyatt•ARTICLE•Moussons•1999

The mid-1820s was a critical period when Siam had to act upon various events: the first Anglo-Burmese War, leading to the rise of British power and the decline of Burma; the visit to Bangkok of a British mission; and the resurgence of Lao power under King Anu of Vientiane. This paper attempts to read the available sources “between the lines” in order to get a grasp of the crucial questions, virtually ignored in the existing literature, of how the…

  • History and Directionality in the Early Nineteenth-Century Tai World

    D Wyatt, David K Wyatt•CHAPTER•Last Stand of Asian Autonomies•1997

‘The last stand’ naturally conjures up images reminiscent of General George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Its associations are implicitly defensive, and it vaguely suggests hopelessness and perhaps foolishness. The ‘last stand’ is a romantic and symbolic gesture: it is perhaps brave and gallant, but in no way could it reverse the irresistible historical tide against which it ‘stood’. The imagery of the ‘last stand’ is no…

    Open Access•David K Wyatt, David Wyatt•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•1997•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 4

Despite the serious studies of the past century, the history of Mainland Southeast Asia is still poorly understood. This is not to say that we do not have numerous studies of particular countries and events in individual countries; but, despite the efforts of Victor Lieberman, Anthony Reid, and others, we still lack a comprehensive sense of the dynamics of the premodern history of long periods on a region-wide basis

  • The Nan Chronicle

    David K Wyatt•BOOK•Nan Chronicle•1994

A new translation of the 1894 chronicle by a high-ranking official from the Nan kingdom, a once-powerful principality whose territory encompassed all of what is now northwestern Laos and neighboring portions of China, in addition to the present province of Nan in Thailand. It details the history of the principality, the legendary origins of the Nan River Valley, the rituals and customs of the Nan, the moral duties of the ruler, and royal genealog…

In 1962 the association for asian studies met, as this year, in Boston, at its fourteenth annual meeting, when the Association was addressed by its President that year, Lauriston Sharp. In his search for "some of the continuities and discontinuities of human experience in Southeast Asia," Sharp proposed that "we should first work back from the present and up the little streams, the short runs of Southeast Asian history and prehistory" (Sharp 1962…

  • Laws and Social Order in Early Thailand

Open Access•D Wyatt, David K Wyatt•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•1984

Over the past several decades a considerable body of scholarly literature has accumulated concerning the evolution of Thai social and political patterns, behaviour, and values, and our study of Thai society now is much more solidly-based than it was only a generation ago. One might legitimately begin to wonder, however, whether we might not “have it all wrong”. The question is not entirely flippant. Much of what has been written on such subjects …

  • Thai Historical Materials in Bangkok

Open Access•D Wyatt, David K Wyatt et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•1965•Referencias: 1

Compared with the other countries of Southeast Asia, the Western-language historiography of Thailand is meagre indeed. Western sources have furthered scholarship considerably, but historical writing on Thailand will remain unbalanced until Thai materials have been fully exploited. Some beginning has been made on this work by both Thai and Western scholars, but as yet this is only a beginning
