Health behavior of working-aged Finns predicts self-reported life satisfaction in a population-based 9-years follow-up
Good health behavior has a long-term beneficial impact on subsequent life satisfaction. This knowledge could strengthen the motivation for improvement of health behavior particularly on an individual level but also on a policy level
Personality Disorder and Physical Health Comorbidities
We examined whether personality disorders (PDs) (any, cluster A/B/C) were associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in a population-based sample of Australian women ( n = 696). Personality and mood disorders were assessed using semi-structured diagnostic interviews. BMD was measured at the spine, hip, and total body using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (GE-Lunar Prodigy). Anthropometrics, medication use, physical conditions, and lifestyle fact…
Physical Activity, Residential Environment, and Nature Relatedness in Young Men—A Population-Based Mopo Study
Background : In general, nature relatedness is positively associated with physical activity, health, and subjective well-being. However, increased residence in urban areas, and the decrease in natural spaces, may affect the younger generation most adversely. The associated environmental changes can increase youths' risk of spending most of their time indoors, and weaken their nature relatedness, making them less likely to enjoy nature's health be…
Low sense of coherence during postoperative recovery is associated with a poorer lumbar spinal stenosis – surgical outcome
This study investigated the association between the 3-month postoperative sense of coherence and the 5-year postoperative outcome of decompressive surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis. The participants with a lower sense of coherence at the 3-month follow-up had a poorer functional ability and lower satisfaction with surgery, higher pain ratings, lower life satisfaction and more depressive symptoms 5 years postoperatively. A low 3-month sense of co…
Disordered eating behavior, health and motives to exercise in young men
In young men, disordered eating behavior was associated with being overweight, having poor self-rated health, and having a greater amount of leisure sitting time as well as non-health-related motives to exercise. In order to recognize those at risk for disordered eating behavior, evaluating these factors could be beneficial
Profiles of sedentary and non-sedentary young men – a population-based Mopo study
Determinants of sedentary and non-sedentary lifestyles were multiple and partially overlapping. Recognizing individual patterns and underlying factors of the sedentary lifestyle is essential for tailored health promotion and interventions
Effects of Self-Rated Health and Self-Rated Economic Situation on Depressed Mood Via Life Satisfaction Among Older Adults in Costa Rica
This study suggests that subjective variables such as self-rated health, economic situation, and life satisfaction should be considered when addressing the onset of depressed mood
Life Satisfaction and Bone Mineral Density Among Postmenopausal Women
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether and how global life satisfaction is associated with bone mineral density (BMD) and bone loss. METHODS: A total of 2167 women from a cohort of Finnish women born in 1932 to 1941 were included in the cross-sectional and 1147 women in the 10-year longitudinal part of the present study. Participants responded to a postal enquiry and underwent femoral BMD densitometry in 1999 (baseline) and…
Unemployment and ill health
This preliminary finding suggests that stress-induced low-grade inflammation might be a link between unemployment and ill health
Recovery from Depression
Background: The recovery from depression and factors associated with it are not well known in the general population. Aims: To conduct a two-year follow-up of general population subjects and investigate their recovery from depression. Methods: Individuals who were assessed as suffering from depression on the basis of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores were monitored for two years. Results: Sixty-five per cent were still depressed after two ye…
Life satisfaction and depression in a 15-year follow-up of healthy adults
Ftors Associated with Hopelessness
Background: Hopelessness is associated with depression and suicidality in clinical as well as in non-clinical populations. However, data on the prevalence of hopelessness and the associated factors in general population are exiguous. Aims: To assess the prevalence and the associated factors of hopelessness in a general population sample. Methods: The random population sample consisted of 1722 subjects. The study questionnaires included the Beck H…
Life Satisfaction and Suicide
OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated whether self-reported life satisfaction predicted suicide over a period of 20 years (1976-1995) in adults unselected for mental health status. METHOD: A nationwide sample of adults aged 18-64 years (N=29,173) from the Finnish Twin Cohort responded to a health questionnaire that included a life satisfaction scale (score range=4-20, with higher scores indicating greater dissatisfaction) that covered four items: i…
Self-reported Life Satisfaction and 20-Year Mortality in Healthy Finnish Adults
The authors investigated the role of self-reported life satisfaction in mortality with a prospective cohort study (1976-1995). A nationwide sample of healthy adults (18-64 years, n = 22,461) from the Finnish Twin Cohort responded to a questionnaire about life satisfaction and known predictors of mortality in 1975. A summary score for life satisfaction (LS), defined as interest in life, happiness, loneliness, and general ease of living (scale rang…
Associations between Religious Attendance, Social Support, and Depression in Psychiatric Patients
Religious attendance and social support have been found to be positively associated with mental well-being, although this may be threatened by depression. Here we studied whether religious attendance was associated with mildness of depression and whether social support explained this association among 1,179 patients in community mental health services in Kuopio province, Finland. More women (20%) than men (11%) attended religious events regularly…
