  • Evacuee Behavior Modeling during Robot-Guided Evacuations

    Open Access•Mollik Nayyar, Alan R Wagner•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2025

Evacuation robots hold promise for facilitating efficient and safe building evacuations during emergencies. While studies have demonstrated that people will follow an evacuation robot [Nayyar 2019 28th IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN):1–6, 1, Robinette et al. 2016 11th ACM/IEEE International Conference On:101–108, 2], many practical hurdles remain. This paper uses a human subject study in a physi…

  • The Aristotelian Robot

    E Mendieta, Alan R Wagner•ARTICLE•Philosophy Today•2024

In this essay an engineer and a philosopher, after many conversations, develop an argument for why the Aristotelian version of virtue ethics is the most promising way to develop what we call artificial moral, social agents, i.e. robots. This, evidently, applies to humans as well. There are several claims: first, that humans are not born moral, they are socialized into morality; second, that morality involves affect, emotion, feeling, before it en…

  • Christoph Bartneck, Tony Belpaeme, Friederike Eyssel, Takayuki Kanda, Merel Keijsers and Selma Sabanovic, Human–Robot Interaction

    Open Access•Alan R Wagner•ARTICLE•Prometheus•2022

Although the ideas that underpin Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) are not new, the concepts and organizing principles of this field have recently coalesced into a standalone, experimentally verifiable line of inquiry. The field of human-robot interaction is an amalgam of concepts and methods from psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, engineering and even more remote fields, such as ethology. There are few interconnecting conceptual…

  • What Happens When Robots Punish? Evaluating Human Task Performance During Robot-Initiated Punishment

    Open Access•Himavath Jois, Alan R Wagner•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2021

This article examines how people respond to robot-administered verbal and physical punishments. Human participants were tasked with sorting colored chips under time pressure and were punished by a robot when they made mistakes, such as inaccurate sorting or sorting too slowly. Participants were either punished verbally by being told to stop sorting for a fixed time, or physically, by restraining their ability to sort with an in-house crafted robo…

  • Where to Next? The Impact of Covid-19 on Human-Robot Interaction Research

    Open Access•David Feil-Seifer, Kerstin S Haring et al.•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2020•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 9

The COVID-19 pandemic will have a profound and long-lasting impact on the entire scientific endeavor. Scientists already are adapting research programs to adapt to changes in what is prioritized—and what is possible; educators are changing the way that the next generation of researchers are trained, and flagship conferences in many fields are being cancelled, postponed, and fundamentally transformed. These broad-reaching changes are particularly …
