  • Chronological Model of a Brazilian Holocene Shellmound (Sambaqui da Tarioba, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

    K D Macario, R C C L Souza et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 31

Since the beginning of the Holocene, hunter-gatherers have occupied the central-south Brazilian coast, as it was a very productive estuarine environment. Living as fishers and mollusk gatherers, they built prehistoric shellmounds, known as sambaqui , up to 30 m high, which can still be found today from the Espírito Santo (21°S) to Rio Grande do Sul (32°S) states, constituting an important testimony of paleodiversity and Brazilian prehistory. The …

  • The Brazilian AMS Radiocarbon Laboratory (LAC-UFF) and the Intercomparison of Results with Cena and Ugams

    Kita Macario, K D Macario et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 32

After 22 yr of the low-level liquid scintillation counting 14 C laboratory at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA) at São Paulo University (USP), Piracicaba, Brazil, and several collaborative projects with Brazilian and international researchers from distinct scientific areas, the first 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) laboratory in Latin America was installed at the Physics Institute of the Universidade Federal Fluminense …

  • The Long-Term Tupiguarani Occupation in Southeastern Brazil

    Open Access•Kita Macario, K D Macario et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2009•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 8

We discuss some aspects of the chronology of the Tupiguarani occupation in the southeastern Brazilian coast based on the analyses of 3 charcoal samples from the Morro Grande archaeological site (Rio de Janeiro state). 14 C beta spectroscopy and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques were used to determine ages of 2920 ± 70 BP, 2600 ± 160 BP, and 510 ± 160 BP. The occurrence of these ancient dates in southeastern Brazil has important impli…

  • The Antiquity of the Prehistoric Settlement of the Central-South Brazilian Coast

    Open Access•T A Lima, K D Macario et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2002•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 2

We discus here the prehistoric settlement of the central-south Brazilian coast, and, more specifically, 1 old radiocarbon date obtained for a costal shellmound, as well as its implications concerning the chronology attributed to the settlement process. The accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique was used to determine the 14 C age of charcoal from a shellmound on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro. The resulting age was 7860 ± 80 BP, an un…
