Disseminating the Results of Participant-Focused Research
Participant-focused research (PFR) includes the fisubjectsfl as full partners in the research process. As such, participants share in the products or outcomes of research. PFR goes beyond the traditional research approach of disseminating findings to other scientists and clinicians and includes participants and community residents in sharing the skills, knowledge, and resources of the study with the objective of empowering the participants. Conceptualizing Vulnerable Populations Health-Related Research
BACKGROUND: A conceptual model for vulnerable populations research relates resource availability and relative risk to health status. The model has a population-based focus that places responsibility for the collective health status of its citizens with the community. Vulnerable populations are social groups who experience limited resources and consequent high relative risk for morbidity and premature mortality. There is considerable research evid…
Health Problems of Low-Income Female Caregivers of Adults With Hiv/Aids
The purpose of this study was (a) to determine the mental and physical health status of low-income urban women who were providing informal home care to adults with HIV/AIDS, (b) to discover the best predictors of physical and mental health problems in the caregivers, and (c) to make recommendations for nursing interventions to assist these caregivers. The study was based on a conceptualization of female caregivers as a population vulnerable to in…
Longitudinal effects of an HIV testing and counseling programme for low‐income Latina women
It should be noted that the changes in practices made by the study group did not necessarily reduce their risk of HIV infection or transmission and were not related to the demonstrated knowledge and skills improvement. Of special significance to programme planners, educators and researchers, both the quantitative and qualitative data revealed problem areas with the intervention protocol related to cultural norms and the possible fragmentation of …
Home medication injection among Latina women in Los Angeles
Reuse of needles and syringes after home injection of medications and vitamins may be a risk for transmission of HIV. An exploratory study was done to determine (1) how commonly injectable medications were used in the home; (2) whether needles and syringes were reused; and (3) common practices for cleaning needles and syringes. A survey was conducted of low income Latina women (n = 216) who were attending a Public Health Foundation nutrition prog…

Relationships in the stress-process model, examining level of acculturation, social support, marital status, religion, education, and ethnicity associated with self-esteem in 491 immigrant women from Latin America at baseline and 1 year later were studied. The mediating/moderating effects of social support, marital status, religion, and education on the relation between level of acculturation and self-esteem were analyzed. Findings, based on corr…
Sexual practices, attitudes, and knowledge related to HIV transmission in low income Los Angeles Hispanic women
The sexual practices, attitudes, and knowledge related to HIV transmission were investigated in low income Hispanic women in Los Angeles. Data were collected by both quantitative and qualitative methods from two independent samples, one of survey respondents (N = 508) and the other of focus group participants (N = 55). Participants were low income Hispanic women in Los Angeles who were receiving a Public Health Foundation nutrition program for Wo…
Significant Influence of Participation in Ethnic-Specific Programs on Clinical Diagnosis for Asian Americans
Asian American clients ( N = 1528) in the Los Angeles County mental health system who were seen at ethnic-specific (Asian) clinics by Asian therapists were diagnosed with significantly lower percentages of psychotic disorders and other major psychiatric disorders and significantly higher percentages of nonpsychiatric disorders than were Asian clients who were seen by Asian and white therapists at mainstream clinics
Aids-related knowledge, perceptions, and behaviors among impoverished minority women
OBJECTIVES. The aims of this study were to (1) describe AIDS-related knowledge, perceptions, and risky behaviors of impoverished African-American and high- and low-acculturated Latina women; (2) delineate relationships involving high-risk behaviors; and (3) determine whether risky behaviors differ by race and levels of acculturation. METHODS. Survey instruments were administered to 1173 impoverished women of color residing in homeless shelters an…
Effects of an Asian client-therapist language, ethnicity and gender match on utilization and outcome of therapy
Influence of Therapist Ethnicity and Language On Therapy Outcomes of Southeast Asian Clients
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of Southeast Asian client- therapist ethnicity and language match on three therapy outcomes: number of ses sions with primary therapist, dropout from therapy and admission-discharge difference in Global Assessment Scale (GAS) scores. The sample consisted of 543 Southeast Asian client episodes in Los Angeles County mental health facilities between January 1983 and August 1988. Various types…

Data were collected by mailed questionnaires and personal interviews from a probability sample of 3,057 rural residents. The need for mental health services was found to be no greater than that which has been reported for other residential areas. The social indicator…
An Evaluation of the Index of Medical Underservice
The validity of the Index of Medical Underservice (IMU) was evaluated by examining the ability of the IMU to discriminate among levels of need for health services reported by rural consumers in response to a mail survey questionnaire. It was hypothesized that if the IMU is a valid indicator of medical underservice, then where the IMU value for an area was relatively low, respondents would report relatively less access and availability of health s…
