  • Scoping Review of Universal Design for Learning Principles Embedded in Subjects in Secondary Education

Open Access•Danielle Phelan, Helen Maguire et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Education•2025

To date, much of the research on UDL has focussed on higher education, with a dearth of research surrounding UDL within secondary education. This study aimed to identify the application of the principles of UDL embedded in subjects in secondary education worldwide. The PRISMA ScR methodological framework was employed, and numerical summaries and thematic analysis were utilised to describe the data quantitatively and qualitatively, respectively. R…

  • Unlocking insights in the everyday: Exploring practices to foster sustainable maximum use of clothing

Open Access•Helen Maguire, Frances Fahy•ARTICLE•Cleaner and Responsible Consumption•2023

Each stage of the fashion clothing lifecycle exerts multitudinous negative impacts on the planet. To date, research and policy interventions toward sustainable clothing consumption have largely concentrated on the initial and final life-stages of clothing production, and garment disposal. However, such efforts, even alongside industry technological advances, have failed to balance ever-expanding fashion consumption demand. More recently, alongsid…

  • Sew what for sustainability? Exploring intergenerational attitudes and practices to clothing repair in Ireland

    Open Access•Helen Maguire, Frances Fahy•ARTICLE•Irish Geography•2023

While a traditional practice, clothing repair has recently garnered more attention from geographers and social scientists examining potential pathways to increase sustainable consumption and contribute to a circular economy. Clothing repair is fundamentally about extending the active life of garments and is a key phase of a closed-loop system effectively reducing the need for virgin resources thus avoiding clothing obsolescence or disposal as was…

  • Practising fashion and wardrobe studies: A geographical reframing

    Open Access•Helen Maguire, Frances Fahy•ARTICLE•Area•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 30

Everyday household sustainability challenges and dilemmas, particularly related to consumption of domestic resources energy, water, and food, are already an important focus in contemporary geographical inquiry. This paper seeks to advance the perspective by exploring a less obvious aspect: everyday fashion consumption practices specifically in the use phase of clothing. Whereas research on clothing sustainability impact has largely pursued produc…

  • Prospective evaluation of a complex public health intervention: Lessons from an initial and follow-up cross-sectional survey of the tuberculosis strain typing service in England

Open Access•Jessica Mears, Ibrahim Abubakar et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Evaluation of a complex public health intervention is challenging. In this example, the immediate national roll-out of the TB-STS meant that a controlled survey design was not possible. This study informs the future development of the TB-STS by identifying the need for training to reach wider professional groups, and argues for its continuation based on service users' perception that it is useful. By highlighting the importance of a well-defined …

  • Epidemiology of internal contamination with polonium-210 in the London incident, 2006

    G Fraser, Graham C Fraser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Referencias: 7

BACKGROUND: More than 700 UK residents were tested for possible contamination with polonium-210 ((210)Po) following the alleged poisoning of Mr Alexander Litvinenko in London in November 2006. This paper describes the epidemiology of internal contamination with the radionuclide in this group. METHODS: 11 locations in London had been identified as sufficiently environmentally contaminated with (210)Po to present a health risk to people associated …

  • O6-4.3 Poliomyelitis epidemic in Pointe-Noire, October–December 2010: Troubled times ahead for global polio eradication

Arnaud Le Menach, A Llosa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction On 4 November 2010, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Congo declared a poliomyelitis outbreak in Pointe-Noire, the eastern economic capital. We conducted an outbreak investigation to describe the epidemic and estimate vaccination coverage to better understand virus spread. Methods We collected clinical, demographic and geographic data about cases and vaccination policies from local health authorities. Cases were defined as re…

  • Testing for sexually transmitted infections in general practice: Cross-sectional study

Open Access•Katharine Sadler, Katharine E Sadler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

There are substantial geographical differences in the intensity of chlamydia and HIV testing in general practice. Interventions to facilitate sexually transmitted infection and HIV testing in general practice are needed to improve access to effective sexual health care. The use of routinely-collected laboratory, practice-level and demographic data for monitoring sexual health service provision and informing service planning should be more widely …
