Liminality and Identity Negotiation in a Refugee Camp
아프리카 남동부 내륙국가인 말라위에 위치한 잘레카 난민캠프(Dzaleka Refugee Camp)는 콩고민주공화국(DRC) 출신 난민들이 다수를 차지하며, 이들 대부분은 10년 이상 장기화된 난민들이다. 상당수는 고국 밖에서 출생한 1.5세 또는 2세대 청년들로, 고국에 대한 기억이 희미하거나 전무한 채 성장하였으며, 민족 정체성을 포함한 자기 정체성 형성과 협상 과정에서 복합적인 도전에 직면하고 있다. 본 연구는 이들 콩고 난민 청년들이 캠프 내 전통 민족 조직인 ‘루분가(Lubunga)’를 중심으로 어떤 방식으로 정체성을 구성하고 재구성하는지를 탐구한다. 루분가는 각 종족의 장로들이 언어, 역사, 규범, 전통 의례 등을 전수하는 비공식 교육기관이자, 상상의 공동체와 집단 기억을 생산하는 상징적 공간이며, 동시에 규범 위반에 대한 훈육과 처벌을 수행하는 통제기제 역할을 한다. 연구자는 말라위 …
Rebuilding Lives Beyond Traditional Destinations
This study examines how initial resettlement locations shape refugee integration by developing a typology from U.S. refugee placement data (2008–2015). Using cluster analysis, three destination types are identified—(1) Gateway Cities, (2) Rapidly Growing Small Communities, and (3) Revitalizing Communities—each with distinct opportunity structures and constraints. This article seeks to unpack the gendered dynamic of transit migration through a case study of North Korean women escapees in China. Drawing on the notion of situated agency, which implies that agency is a kind of social embedding, this paper analysed 30 interview narratives of North Korean women to capture the structural factors that shape their risky journeys and precarious lives in transit.
