  • Radiocarbon dating of the end of the latest Caspian Sea overflow through the Manych Depression (southeastern European Plain)

    Open Access•Daria V Semikolennykh, A V Panin et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Citada por: 1

The Manych Depression is a relatively narrow elongated depression of tectonic origin, connecting the Caspian and Azov-Black Sea basins. The Caspian Sea repeatedly discharged its waters through this depression into the Black Sea and further into the Mediterranean Sea during the Quaternary period. The last discharge occurred in MIS 2 when the Khvalynian transgression waters exceeded the drainage divide between those two basins. The geochronology of…

Alexander Kolesnik, Vadim Titov et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

The Middle Paleolithic, as an epoch in the development of human society, was characterized by the homeostasis between the socio-cultural systems and their natural environments. Middle Paleolithic сommunities settled in the areas with the most favorable combinations of basic resources. At that time, almost the entire territory of the southern part of the Russian Plain, including the Donbass and Azov regions, was dominated by steppe landscapes. In …

  • Hydrological Regime of Rivers in the Periglacial Zone of the East European Plain in the Late MIS 2

    Open Access•Aleksey Sidorchuk, A V Panin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2024

At the end of the Pleniglacial and the first half of the Late Glacial period, approximately between 18 and 14 ka BP, rivers of the central and southern parts of the East European Plain had channels up to 10 times as large as the present day channels of the same rivers. These ancient channels, called large meandering palaeochannels, are widespread in river floodplains and low terraces. The hydrological regime of these large rivers is of great inte…

Open Access•A V Panin, Yulian Konstantinov et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2024

The climatostratigraphic scale of the Upper Middle Pleistocene in the northwest of the East European Plain contains a number of controversial issues, one of which is the position of the Likhvin (Holstein) Interglacial and lesser warm (interstadial) climatic events. To approach this problem, we have studied two sections of Quaternary deposits, Bolshaya Kosha (a well-known and long-studied natural exposure) and Nazarovo (a new, previously unknown s…

A V Panin, Natalya Akhmetgaleeva et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2024

Series of 14C dates from cultural layers (CL) of Byki sites are in the range 1—5 thousand years. Simple statistical processing does not allow to narrow down the age estimates. To assess the reliability of 14C dates, we developed an approach based on the assessment of sedimentation dynamics using luminescence (OSL) dating and age determination of the main lithostratigraphic units. The OSL method was used to date the section of the multilayer site …

  • Evolution of the Upper Reaches of Fluvial Systems within the Area of the East European Plain Glaciated during MIS 6

Open Access•A V Panin, Andrey Panin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2022

The headwaters of fluvial systems on the East European Plain between the boundaries of the Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2) and MIS 6 glaciations evolved during the last 150,000 years. At least three main events of high surface runoff caused intensive erosion: at the end of MIS 6, at the end of MIS 2 and in the Middle Holocene. Erosion developed in the territory with variable resistance of geological substrate, from hard-to-erode tills to weak sand…
