Genetic variation at the immunoglobulin allotype loci in Creoles of Trinidad
The sera of a sample of 204 Croeoles from Trinidad were tested for the presence of polymorphic gene complexes occurring on immunoglobulin ligh‐ and heavy‐chain molecules including the allotypic markers IGKC 1, IGHA2 1 and 2, IGHG1 A, X, F, and Z, and IGHG3 G, G5, BO, B1, B3, B4, B5, C3, C5, S, and T. Nine IGHG (GM) haplotypes occur in polymorphic frequencies (>0.1) in this population, including known African, Asian, Caucasian, and Amerindian mark…
Ethnic differences in alcohol use, abuse, and sensitivity
The biomedical literature for the period 1978–84 was surveyed for nine categories of alcohol response (consumption rate, absorption rate from the digestive tract, metabolism rate, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) variants, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) variants, “alcohol sensitivity,” cardiovascular changes, psychological changes, alcohol abuse), looking for data on possible ethnic differences. Evidence is presented to show that “Caucasian” genes ( B, K, Lu a , r, AK 2 , P c , and Gm 3,5,11 ) in hybrid North American Indian populations follow a Poisson distribution. A method of determining the maximum amount of admixture, given an observed count of Caucasian genes, is developed. Establishment of the upper limit of admixture is suggested as the preferred estimate of gene flow in situations where absence of specific genes at particular lo…
