A definition of free sugars for the UK
Public Health England has set a definition for free sugars in the UK in order to estimate intakes of free sugars in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. This follows the recommendation from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition in its 2015 report on Carbohydrates and Health that a definition of free sugars should be adopted. Reported here are the results of a mail survey of 113 graduates from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. Fifty-seven had been admitted with assistance of the Special Admissions Subcommittee (SAS) and 56 had been admitted through the traditional Recruitment and Admissions Committee mechanisms. SAS graduates see more patients daily, and practice more often in primary care specialties in rural and inner-city areas, providing…
Laparoscopic evaluation of the reproductive organs and abdominal cavity content of the lowland gorilla
Laparoscopy was used to examine the abdominal cavity and evaluate reproductive competence in six adult female gorillas which had not demonstrated copulatory activity within 12 months of examination. Blood samples were obtained on the day of laparoscopy and analyzed for serum estradiol‐17β and progesterone. The uterus and oviducts of each gorilla appeared morphologically normal and free of lesions. The ovaries of three animals contained anatomical…

Lead intoxication was diagnosed in 42 primates at the National Zoological Park. Diagnoses were made clinically by the observation of signs of encephalopathy and the finding of 200 μg lead or more/100 ml blood, or postmortem by the presence of renal acid‐fast intranuclear inclusion bodies and excess lead in liver specimens.
