  • The Late Mesolithic juveniles of Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov, Russia

    Open Access•O V Batanina, Olga Batanina et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026•Referencias: 77

Juveniles remain a largely underexplored socio-biological category in Mesolithic mortuary research, despite their potential to shed light on social values and community dynamics. The burial site at Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (YOO), Karelia, Russia, the largest known Mesolithic burial site in Northeastern Europe, provides a unique opportunity to explore the mortuary treatment of children and adolescents. This study uses osteoarchaeological methods in a…

  • Sex and Gender in the Mesolithic

    Open Access•K J Gron, Christopher Meiklejohn et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 68

In the summer of 1986 a mass grave was discovered along the bank of the river Tryggevælde Å where it empties into Køge Bugt, the bay south of modern Copenhagen, Denmark. The human remains, dating to the late Mesolithic Ertebølle culture, consisted of eight individuals of multiple ages, ranging c. 35–45 years old to newborn children. Four were arranged on one side of the grave, with four on the other, placed head to foot. How they were related and…

  • Sex estimation of teeth at different developmental stages using dimorphic enamel peptide analysis

    Open Access•Rebecca L Gowland, Nicolas A Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2021•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 22

OBJECTIVES: This study tests, for the first time, the applicability of a new method of sex estimation utilizing enamel peptides on a sample of deciduous and permanent teeth at different stages of mineralization, from nonadults of unknown sex, including perinates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 43 teeth from 29 nonadult individuals aged from 40 gestational weeks to 19 years old were analyzed. The sample included pairs of fully mineralized and j…

  • Sex determination of human remains from peptides in tooth enamel

    Open Access•Nicolas A Stewart, Raquel F Gerlach et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2017

Significance The ability to assign biological sex to human skeletal remains is a fundamental requirement in archaeology, paleoanthropology, and medico-legal sciences. While DNA sequencing can be used, it is expensive, time-consuming, and often fails due to the poor quality of the remaining DNA. An easier, more reliable, and consistently applicable method is needed. We present a method for sex determination of human remains using peptides retrieve…
