  • Depression

Ramon Greenbérg, Chester Pearlman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•1990

In this study we consider the complexity of the condition known as depression. We studied both physiological and psychological aspects of the disorder by using psychodynamically oriented interviews, sleep EEGs, and dreams collected in the laboratory. We found considerable variability in the sleep, psychodynamic, and dream patterns. Some possible relations of these patterns to treatment results were noted. We discuss these findings in relation to …

  • The Patient–Analyst Match and the Outcome of Psychoanalysis

    Open Access•Judy L Kantrowitz, Ann L Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1989•Citada por: 26

This paper presents a pilot study in which we explore the possibility that the match between analyst and analysand is a factor of central importance in the analytic situation. It is an attempt to look at the issue of match across a large number of patients. The data we used were not collected for studying this topic; thus, the study has serious limitations. Nevertheless, certain patterns emerged which support our thesis that patient–analyst match…

  • A View of Aggression in Phobic States

    W W Meissner, Ana‐maria Rizzuto et al.•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1987•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 7

This article attempts to apply a theory of aggression as motivation to overcome obstacles to the understanding of phobic states and their formation. The role of aggression in the genesis of phobic conditions is discussed, and the traditional analytic view of aggression as instinctual drive is contrasted with a motivational approach. The motivational view offers the advantage of a clearer understanding of the stimulus contexts, representational co…

  • Changes in the Level and Quality of Object Relations in Psychoanalysis

    Open Access•Judy L Kantrowitz, Ann L Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1987•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 10

As part of a prospective, longitudinal study of suitability for and outcome of psychoanalysis, 22 patients were evaluated for changes in the level and quality of their object relations. These patients had been accepted for supervised analysis with candidates in training by senior analysis who had diagnosed them as neurotic. The majority of these patients reported difficulties in relationships as at least one of their reasons for originally seekin…

  • The Role of Reality Testing in Psychoanalysis

    Open Access•Judy L Kantrowitz, Ann L Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1987•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 9

As part of a prospective, longitudinal study of psychoanalytic outcome, 22 patients were evaluated for changes in their level of reality testing. These patients had been accepted for supervised psychoanalysis with candidates in training by senior analysts who had diagnosed them as neurotic. Psychological tests given prior to the beginning of analysis indicated, however, that more than one third of our sample demonstrated serious distortions in th…

  • Affect Availability, Tolerance, Complexity, and Modulation in Psychoanalysis

    Open Access•Judy L Kantrowitz, Frank Paolitto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1986•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 7

Evaluation of 22 patients in supervised psychoanalysis showed that affect availability and tolerance changed in a positive direction during the course of psychoanalysis. In this study, we have defined criteria of change that can be clinically observed. The changes observed were present one year following the completion of psychoanalysis. Ratings of analysts' and patients' interviews, and ratings of psychological tests all revealed that patients h…

  • Clinical Measurement in Psychoanalysis

Peter H Knapp, Ramon Greenbérg et al.•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1975•Referencias: 8

Measurement of the complex phenomena in psychoanalysis is approached by defining interrelated elements in the analytic situation and specifying the range of their variation in scales which can be both generalized and made specific for an individual patient. Using this approach in transcripts of psychoanalytic sessions, we rate painful emotion, impairment of defensive maneuvers, and activation of threatening conflictual fantasies. This preliminary…
