  • Characterization of black crust on archaeological marble from the Library of Hadrian in Athens and inferences about contributing pollution sources

    Open Access•Dimitriοs Mitsos, V Kantarelou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

Samples of black crust from the Roman-era monument of the Library of Hadrian (Athens) have been collected to perform chemical and mineralogical characterization of the degradation products on built heritage, utilizing a synergy of analytical techniques. The decay features consist of typical black crusts and a Fe-rich aluminosilicate patina. The chemical composition of the crusts, the element distribution along the crust and the characterization o…

  • Bronze votive pins from the sanctuary of Athena Alea at Tegea, Arcadia, Greece, ca. 9th-7th BCE

  • Micro‐XRF analysis of silver decorations on Archaic helmets from Olympia

    Open Access•R Grethe, A G Karydas et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 16

Quantitative micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were performed on 19 silver decorations of six Archaic bronze helmets from the archaeological site of Olympia, Greece. The principal aim of the study was to investigate technological aspects of the smelting process that influence the composition of Ag, reveal possible elemental correlations and shed light on its source, assigning a likely provenance. The XRF results revealed that all decoration…

  • Th century ornamented metal trays from Greece and Turkey

    Open Access•Despoina Kotzamani, V Kantarelou et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2017

Twelve ‘Japanned’ metal trays from Greece and Turkey, dated in the 19th century, were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic examination (stereoscopy, metallography, scanning electron microscopy) as well as to XRF and SEM-EDX analysis. The trays represent two stylistic types made of wrought iron either tin-plated or protected with a primer. Two were manufactured by forging while the rest were made by rolling prior to die forming with drop hamme…

  • The Height of Denier Tournois Minting in Greece (1289–1313) According to New Archaeometric Data

    Open Access•J M Baker, J Baker et al.•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•2017•Referencias: 10

The years 1289–1313 witnessed particularly prolific minting activities at different southern and central Greek mints on behalf of different polities. The coin issues are of great economic and political relevance, and therefore of interest to modern historians. Our understanding of these is based on traditional sources, either numismatic (types and finds), or historical. This paper aims to investigate the possibilities of adding further details to…
