  • The potential of routine surveillance data for identifying the needs of people living with HIV among migrants

Open Access•Klara Röbl, Martin Friebe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

Since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, more than one million people from Ukraine – a country with high Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-prevalence – have fled to Germany. We aimed to estimate the number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) with a link to Ukraine reported to the German HIV notification system, analyse their characteristics and estimate the proportion of prior known infections to better understand the care needs of this po…

  • Exploring 4 years of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis as a statutory health insurance benefit in Germany—a longitudinal claims data analysis

Open Access•Sandra Schmischke, Christian Kollan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Introduction of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) into German statutory health insurance in September 2019 reduced barriers to an effective tool for HIV prevention. Objective: This study aims to provide a longitudinal analysis of HIV-PrEP care in a real-world setting in Germany between 09/2019-08/2023 using claims data from the insurance provider BARMER. Methods: We assessed anonymized claims data to analyze PrEP care and user chara…

  • Long-acting prescriptions and therapy for HIV-1 from market launch to the present in Germany (May 2021 to December 2023)

Open Access•Daniel Schmidt, Christian Kollan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: In Europe, the combination of cabotegravir (CAB) with rilpivirine (RPV) has been approved as a dual injection long-acting (LA) therapy for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infections in adults since December 2020. Studies have shown that between 36 and 61% of people living with HIV (PLWHIV) prefer LA therapy. However, there are no real-world data on the number of people receiving LA therapy, in Germany or i…

  • Dynamics of HIV PrEP use and coverage during and after Covid-19 in Germany

Open Access•Daniel Schmidt, Yannick Duport et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Our approach presents a comprehensive solution to monitor and forecast PrEP implementation from anonymous data and highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly decelerated PrEP uptake in Germany. Moreover, slow PrEP uptake in rural areas indicate that structural barriers in PrEP care, education or information exist that may hamper the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030

  • Routine Data Analysis of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use and Rates of Sexually Transmitted Infections Since Coverage of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis by the Statutory Health Insurance in Germany

Open Access•Frederik Valbert, Daniel Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2024•Referencias: 30

Human immunodeficiency virus pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is considered as an effective protection against a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. However, it is still unclear, how PrEP use is associated with the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) other than HIV. PrEP became reimbursable in Germany from September 1, 2019 for persons with statutory health insurance (SHI). With the EvE-PrEP study, the Federal Ministry of …

  • Additional challenges in reaching hepatitis C elimination goals in Germany due to the Covid-19 pandemic - descriptive analysis of drug prescription data from January 2018 to June 2021

Open Access•Emily Meyer, Emily D Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Effectively treating hepatitis C viral (HCV) infections prevents sequelae and onward transmission. In Germany, HCV drug prescriptions have declined since 2015. During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns impacted the access to HCV care services and HCV treatment. We assessed if the COVID-19 pandemic further decreased treatment prescriptions in Germany. We built log-linear models with monthly HCV drug prescription data from pharmacies from January 201…

  • Increasing Number of Individuals Receiving Hepatitis B nucleos(t)ide Analogs Therapy in Germany, 2008–2019

Open Access•Anna Maisa, Christian Kollan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: Germany is a low prevalence country for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection with higher prevalence in vulnerable groups. The number of treated chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients is unknown. We aimed to determine the number of CHB patients treated with nucleos(t)ide analogs (NUCs), the treatment costs within the statutory health insurance (SHI) in Germany and per patient per month. Methods: Data on pharmacy bills of NUCs to patients with…

  • Everything counts - a method to determine viral suppression among people living with HIV using longitudinal data for the HIV care continuum - results of two large, German, multi-center real-life cohor…

Open Access•the HIV-1 Seroconverter cohort, Daniel Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

We provide a method for estimating viral suppression and duration of viremia using longitudinal VL data. We observed a continuous and remarkable increase of viral suppression. Furthermore, a notable proportion of those with viremia showed low-level viremia and were therefore unlikely to transmit HIV. Individual health risks and HIV drug resistance among those with low-level viremia are problematic, and viral suppression remains the goal. In 2018,…

  • High variability of TB, HIV, hepatitis C treatment and opioid substitution therapy among prisoners in Germany

Open Access•Jana Müller, Daniel Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

According to our findings treatment rates for TB were consistent with the expected TB prevalence, at least in Berlin. HIV treatment seems to be offered to an adequate proportion of estimated infected prisoners. In contrast, the HCV treatment prevalence was low. High variation among FS in provision of all treatments, particularly of OST, point to inconsistent treatment practices, although nationwide extramural treatment guidelines for Germany exis…

  • From pills to patients

Open Access•Daniel Schmidt, Christian Kollan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

A substantial increase in the number of people receiving ART was observed from 2006 to 2013 in Germany

  • The denominator problem

Open Access•Ulrich Marcus, Alvin J Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Considering the difficulties to obtain regionally representative data by other sampling methods for MSM, in Western post-industrialized countries internet-based surveys may provide an easy and low cost tool to estimate regional population distributions. With national surveillance data, which categorize transmission groups, regional population-specific incidence rates for reportable sexually transmitted infections can be estimated. HIV prevalence …
