Workplace sexual harassment is associated with poor mental well-being among employees at a large Swedish university
BACKGROUND: Sexual harassment (SH) is a persistent problem at workplaces around the world, including academia. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the association between SH and mental well-being among employees at Lund University (LU) in Sweden. METHODS: Data was obtained from a cross-sectional survey targeting all LU employees in 2019. SH exposure was measured using a ten-item scale capturing SH experiences and enabling the differentiation between s…
Community perceptions about factors influencing access to care after sexual violence in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Lack of correct knowledge, harmful attitudes from community and healthcare staff, and poorly adapted healthcare services constitute barriers to accessing care. Improved awareness raising around sexual violence is needed to address both lack of knowledge and misconceptions. Efforts should be made to build upon the community support models and actively work to improve community attitudes towards survivors of sexual violence. In addition, there is a…
Included and excluded
Although migrants and youth are included separately in policies addressing sexual violence, the migration regime largely works to exclude different groups of young migrants from access to rights and services and thereby increases their vulnerability to sexual violence
Workplace relational injustice and authoritarian treatment as risk factors for sexual harassment at a large Swedish university
Our findings suggest that superiors' unjust or authoritarian treatment of employees might be contextual factors contributing to workplace sexual harassment, disproportionally affecting women, employees with a foreign background or high academic positions. To ensure evidence-based interventions, researchers should incorporate organisational risk factors in the design and evaluation of workplace interventions aimed at reducing sexual harassing beha…
No evidence, no problem? A critical interpretive synthesis of the vulnerabilities to and experiences of sexual violence among young migrants in Europe
BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that young migrants are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence, however most research has focused on instances of sexual violence occurring in conflict zones and during transit. Much less attention has been given to the vulnerabilities to and experiences of sexual violence among young migrants in Europe. OBJECTIVES: To understand the scientific evidence regarding the experiences of and vulnerabilities to…
Care-seeking patterns and timely access to care among survivors of sexual violence in North Kivu, the Democratic Republic of the Congo
BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is widespread in war-torn North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Timely access to care is crucial for the healing and wellbeing of survivors of sexual violence, but is problematic due to a variety of barriers. Through a better understanding of care-seeking behaviours and factors influencing timely access to care, programmes can be adapted to overcome some of the barriers faced by survivors o…
Risky sexual behavior and associated factors among university students in Ethiopia
RSB continues to be a problem among university students in Ethiopia. Those students who started sex at an early age and those who experienced emotional violence were more likely to engage in RSB. Therefore, universities in Ethiopia should implement strategies such as RSB targeted health education programs that consider early sexual debut, experiences of emotional violence, and safe sexual practices
Coming across a hidden problem in an excluded population in Sweden
Growing evidence suggests that young migrants are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. As young migrants often lack family and social networks, professionals are often the recipients of disclosures of sexual violence. This study aimed to explore how professionals experience young migrants' disclosures of sexual violence. A qualitative design was used, based on 14 semi-structured interviews with a range of professionals from the public sect…
Cultivating resilience and hope
In Uganda, due to the criminalization of same-sex sexual practices, men who have sex with men (MSM) experience barriers to accessing HIV care. To retain patients within the HIV Care Continuum, some health interventions have used patient navigators as an ancillary support service. To understand the potential care benefits of using patient navigators for marginalized populations experiencing challenges to HIV care and treatment access in a Ugandan …

Limited research has examined this study environment from a Demand-Control-Support perspective with regard to sexual harassment. Understanding this environment is key to designing protective measures. This study aimed to examine the association between individual and psychosocial study environm…
Assessing the effectiveness of a sexual and reproductive health and rights training programme in changing healthcare practitioners’ attitudes and practices in low-income countries
INTRODUCTION: In low-income countries the utilisation of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services is influenced by healthcare practitioners' knowledge, attitudes and practices. Despite awareness of the potential problems due to ingrained biases and prejudices, few approaches have been effective in changing practitioners' knowledge, attitudes and practices concerning SRHR in low-income countries. OBJECTIVES: . METHODS: A pre- and …
Validating a modified instrument for measuring Demand-Control-Support among students at a large university in southern Sweden
BACKGROUND: University students experience a distinct working environment in the context of completing their studies. In line with existing research into the connection between workplace environment and stress, it is rational to believe that such study environments can affect the level of stress that students experience. However, few instruments have been developed for measuring this. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate a modified in…
Risky sexual behavior and self-rated mental health among young adults in Skåne, Sweden – a cross-sectional study
The associations found between poor mental health factors and multiple sex partners among females warrant consideration in future public health interventions. Further research to increase the understanding of the causal mechanisms that link mental health factors and risky sexual behavior, especially multiple sex partners, among young adult females is needed to support evidence-based interventions
Survival patterns of neonates born to adolescent mothers and the effect of pregnancy intentions and marital status on newborn survival in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, 2014–2016
BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy and associated neonatal mortality are major global health challenges. In low-income settings where 90% of the 21 million global adolescent pregnancies occur, half are unintended and a fifth experience unsafe abortion. In Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the survival patterns of neonates born to adolescents are unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess survival patterns among neonates born to adolescents and the effect of pregnan…
Enablers of sexual and reproductive health and rights interventions in low- and middle-income countries. Insights from capacity development projects implemented in 13 countries in Africa and Asia
Background The global community has committed to achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, but how to do it remains a challenge in many low-income countries. Capacity development is listed as a means of implementation for Agenda 2030. Although it has been a major element in international development cooperation, including SRHR, its effectiveness and circumstances under which it succeeds or fails have…
HIV self-testing for men who have sex with men in Sweden. A cross-sectional study concerning interest to use HIV self-tests
BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been found to have high acceptability among men who have sex with men (MSM) internationally and might contribute to increase testing frequencies, but many countries, including Sweden, lack policies for using HIVST. OBJECTIVE: To examine interest to use and willingness to pay for HIVST, and associated factors, among MSM attending HIV testing venues in Sweden. METHOD: This cross-sectional study analyzed data…

The objective was to investigate the validity and reliability of a new instrument assessing sexual harassment at a public university in Sweden. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions resulted in a 10-item instrument, the 'Lund University Sexual Harassment Inventory' (LUSHI). A survey was sent to all staff, including PhD students, and students, with a response rate of 33% ( n = 2736) and 32% ( n = 9667), respectively. Exploratory factor a…
Association between Experiences of Different Types of Harassment or Derogatory Treatment and Sexual Harassment among Employees at a Large Swedish University
Sexual harassment (SH) and other forms of mistreatment continue to be a significant problem at workplaces, leading to negative health and work-related outcomes. Previous studies have mainly examined SH and other types of workplace harassment separately. In this study we investigated whether harassment related to any of the seven Swedish legal grounds for discrimination (sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief,…
Sexual harassment among employees and students at a large Swedish university
The results indicate that sexual harassment is common in the university context, and interventions and case management routines of events should consider power relations between victim and perpetrator, as well as the various contexts within which sexual harassment takes place
Investigating pathways for predisposing, enabling and need factors in predicting the use of STI/HIV-testing services among Syrian and Iraqi migrants in Scania, Sweden – a cross-sectional study with di…
Utilization of STI/HIV-testing services among Syrian and Iraqi migrants seemed to be motivated by sexual risk exposure and risk awareness. Interventions should focus on language-adapted information about available screening services and where to go for advice on sexual wellbeing and sexual rights. Such activities should be implemented within an integration promoting framework, addressing structures that increase STI/HIV risk exposure, specificall…
Condom failure and pre-exposure prophylaxis use experience among female sex workers in Ethiopia
The demands and behavior of the clients and FSWs' own actions and poor awareness were factors that increased the exposure of FSWs to condom failure. In addition, the challenges associated with PrEP uptake suggest the need for user-friendly strategies to counteract these barriers and facilitate PrEP uptake
Facilitating an encounter with a new sexuality discourse
Language and different sexual health discourses constitute barriers to the uptake of information on sexual and reproductive health and rights among migrants. Challenges remain with regards to the design and implementation of culturally appropriate programmes and interventions. This study explored the role of civic communicators in increasing access to sexual health information among migrants resettling in Sweden. Twenty in-depth interviews were c…
Male unaccompanied refugee minors’ perceptions of relationships and information about sexual health in Sweden - ‘it feels like you’ve been in prison and then set free’
Unaccompanied refugee minors represent a potentially vulnerable group regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly due to the circumstances surrounding their migration. Research is scarce about the sexual and reproductive health and rights needs of unaccompanied minors, many of whom come from countries with limited access to information about sexual and reproductive health and rights. This study aimed to gain a deeper underst…
‘Fighting an uphill battle’
BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that Tanzanian MSM might prefer consulting pharmacies and drugstores, rather than public healthcare services, when in need of STI medicines and treatment. Yet, few studies have explored the experiences of providing services to MSM clients among those working at pharmacies and drugstores and examined what challenges they encounter in providing these services. OBJECTIVE: To gain increased knowledge and underst…
Cesarean delivery and associated socioeconomic factors and neonatal survival outcome in Kenya and Tanzania
Disproportionate access to cesarean delivery has widened in Kenya and Tanzania. Higher risks of cesarean-related neonatal deaths exist. Medically indicated or not, the safety and/or choice of cesarean delivery is best addressed on individual basis at the health-facility level. However, policy initiatives to eliminate incentives, improve equitable access and accountability to reduce unnecessary cesarean deliveries through well-informed decisions a…
Self-Reported Discrimination in Health-Care Settings Based on Recognizability as Transgender
Discrimination has long been tied to health inequality. Rejected by families and communities because of their gender identity and gender-role behavior, transgender individuals are often socially marginalized. This study aimed to assess discrimination in health-care settings among persons self-identifying as transgender in the U.S. in relation to their recognizability as transgender, operationalized as how often they experienced that others recogn…

Data from 658 HIV-negative respondents, surveyed by a questionnaire at six sites, were analyzed descriptively and by univariable and multivariable logistic regression. A total of 453 (68.8%) of the respondents expressed interest in taking PrEP. Reporting self-perceived risk of HIV acquisition as moderat…
Social capital and sexual behavior among Ugandan university students
BACKGROUND: Uganda has reduced its prevalence of HIV/AIDS from 18 to 6.5% within a decade. An important factor behind this might have been the response from faith-based voluntary organizations, which developed social capital for achieving this. Three behaviors have been targeted: Abstinence, Being faithful, and Condom use (the ABC strategy). The aim of this study was to explore the association between social capital and the ABC behaviors, especia…
Experience of sexual coercion and risky sexual behavior among Ugandan university students
The findings of this study suggest that the experience of sexual coercion is common among youth/young adults in Uganda and is subsequently associated with risky sexual behavior in both sexes. The existence of individual and contextual factors that buffer the effects mentioned was also demonstrated. In the Ugandan context, this has implications for policy formulation and the implementation of preventive strategies for combating HIV/AIDS
Non-use of contraception
BACKGROUND: In Uganda, adolescent pregnancy often results in adverse maternal and neonatal health outcomes. In this context, low use of contraception and high rates of maternal mortality rate make preventing unwanted pregnancies critical. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the relationship between non-use of contraception and sociodemographic factors, alcohol consumption, and types of partner(s) among Ugandan university students. DESIGN: I…
Barriers faced by Ugandan university students in seeking medical care and sexual health counselling
Barriers faced by students in seeking medical and sexual health care should be reduced by interventions aimed at boosting confidence in health care services, encouraging young people to seek early treatment, and increasing awareness of where they can turn for services. The availability of medical services should be increased and waiting times and cost reduced for vulnerable groups
Inequality in fertility rate and modern contraceptive use among Ghanaian women from 1988–2008
One obvious observation is that the discrepancy between equality in use of contraceptives and equality in fertility must be addressed in a future revision of policies related to family planning. Otherwise this could be a major obstacle for attaining further progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5. More research into the causes of the unfortunate discrepancy is urgently needed. There still exist significant education and inco…
Inconsistent condom use among Ugandan university students from a gender perspective
BACKGROUND: Feminization of the HIV/AIDS epidemic has been a prominent phenomenon in sub-Saharan Africa. Inconsistent condom use among young people is one of the major risk factors in the continued propagation of the epidemic. Therefore, it is of importance to increase knowledge of gender aspects of condom use among young people. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether gender differences regarding individual and social factors determine the association…
Associations between mass media exposure and birth preparedness among women in southwestern Uganda
BACKGROUND: Exposure to mass media provides increased awareness and knowledge, as well as changes in attitudes, social norms and behaviors that may lead to positive public health outcomes. Birth preparedness (i.e. the preparations for childbirth made by pregnant women, their families, and communities) increases the use of skilled birth attendants (SBAs) and hence reduces maternal morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to ex…
Sexual coercion and health-risk behaviors among urban Chinese high school students
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between health-risk behaviors and a history of sexual coercion among urban Chinese high school students. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was performed among 109,754 high school students who participated in the 2005 Chinese Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Data were analyzed for 5,215 students who had experienced sexual intercourse (1,483 girls, 3,732 boys). Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine …
Patterns of alcohol consumption and risky sexual behavior
The study supports previous research that alcohol consumption is associated with having multiple sexual partners. Inconsistent condom use was associated with the situational use of alcohol in relation to sexual activity and was similar for both genders. Interventions to reduce alcohol-related risky sexual behavior should target both male and female drinkers, particularly subgroups of students, who often consume alcohol in relation to sexual activ…
Transactional sex and HIV risks – evidence from a cross-sectional national survey among young people in Uganda
BACKGROUND: Transactional sex is associated with the HIV epidemic among young people in Uganda. Few quantitative studies based on nationally representative survey data explored the relationship between sexual behaviors, HIV infection, and transactional sex. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the associations between risky sexual behaviors, participation in transactional sex, and HIV sero-status among men and women aged 15-24 in Uganda. DESI…

METHODS: In-depth interviews with twelve men were conducted in Dar es Salaam, 2012. Data were interpreted through qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Narratives revealed that men's healthcare perceptions were shaped by previous encounters, rumours in gay community, norms and legislation around hom…
Determinants of unmet needs for healthcare and sexual health counselling among Ugandan university students with same-sex sexuality experience
BACKGROUND: Research from sub-Saharan Africa has shown that persons with same-sex sexuality experience are at elevated risk for ill health due to sexual risk taking, stigma, and discrimination. However, studies of healthcare seeking among young people in this region with same-sex sexuality experience are limited. OBJECTIVE: To identify determinants of unmet healthcare and sexual health counselling needs, respectively, among Ugandan university stu…
A generation at risk
HIV/AIDS stigmatizing behaviors are a huge barrier to early detection and treatment of individuals with the AIDS virus. HIV/AIDS stigma and related consequences are debilitating, especially for vulnerable populations. This study sought to assess whether young women's HIV/AIDS knowledge levels and exposure to mass media (television and radio) have an influence on their stigmatizing behaviors and role as agents of stigma towards individuals living …

BACKGROUND: The fact that youth take sexual risks when they are abroad have been shown in previous studies. However, it is not known if they increased their sexual risk-taking when travelling abroad, compared to the stay in their homeland. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Swedish youth increased their individual sexual risk behaviour, defined as having a casual sex partner, when travelling abroad and to examine possible factors that may be associated…
Possibilities for maintaining a strong self – a grounded theory study of relational experiences among Thai women in Sweden
BACKGROUND: Due to increasing globalization and Internet communication, the number of international marriages has increased. In Sweden, 75% of the Thai population are women, among whom 80% are partnered with Swedish or other Scandinavian men. Previous studies have indicated that lack of autonomy, social isolation, and stigma are important risk factors for poor mental health for foreign-born women as well as for women in international marriages. O…
Using pharmacists and drugstore workers as sexual healthcare givers
BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that men who have sex with men (MSM) avoid formal healthcare services because of the fear of discrimination as homosexuality is illegal and stigmatized in Tanzania. Instead, self-treatment by medications obtained directly from pharmacies or drugstores may be common when MSM experience symptoms of suspected sexually transmitted infections (STIs) related to sexual activity with men. OBJECTIVE: To explore MSM'…
Exposure to culturally sensitive sexual health information and impact on health literacy
In Sweden, migrants have poorer sexual and reproductive health compared to the general population. Health literacy, in the form of the cognitive and social skills enabling access to health promoting activities, is often poorer among migrants, partly due to language and cultural barriers. Culturally sensitive health education provides a strategy for enhancing health literacy. Since 2012, specially trained civic and health communicators have provid…
