Making sense of risk
OBJECTIVE: To explore how Irish gay men make sense of sexual health-related risk in contemporary prevention ecology. DESIGN: Qualitative study using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Purposive sampling recruited nine cisgender gay men living in Ireland. Semi-structured interviews (45-60 min) were conducted remotely and deliberately de-framed (the term 'risk' was omitted from materials) to reduce priming. Analysis followed idiographic, cas…
Reducing internalized HIV stigma with Intervention Mapping
HIV is a highly stigmatized condition, and negative beliefs about HIV and people with HIV are frequently internalized. This paper describes how we designed, implemented, and evaluated RESET, an intervention aiming to reduce internalized HIV stigma among people with HIV in the Netherlands. This face-to-face, three-session workshop series was designed, implemented, and evaluated with Intervention Mapping, a systematic approach to behavior change th…
Vulnerable populations among people with HIV
Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key outcome in managing people with HIV. This study examined how sociodemographic factors relate to HRQoL. People with HIV from a Dutch treatment center completed a questionnaire assessing eight HRQoL domains: general health, anxiety and depression, social support, stigma, sexuality problems, self-esteem, sleeping difficulties and side effects. Sociodemographic factors included gender, age, education, e…
Polydrug use during chemsex
Chemsex refers to the intentional use of psychoactive substances to enhance, explore, or alter sexual experiences. The use of geolocation apps, and its link with physical, psychological, and social harms for the individual as well as society has been described ‘Polydrug use’—combining multiple substances to amplify or diversify effects—is frequently reported across these groups. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the sexual effects…
Developing representations of a ‘new’ illness using the Common Sense Model
Objective There is a lack of research on how illness representations as represented in the Common Sense Self-Regulation Model (CS-SRM) emerge and develop. We aimed to describe the evolution of COVID-19 illness representations over time, and to explore associations with sociodemographic characteristics and protective behaviours. Methods and measures This study (June 2020 release from lockdown to February 2021 after vaccine roll-out) used 17 indepen…
Investigating the influence of partner attitudes, norms and risk behavior on condom use decision-making during penile-vaginal sex with casual partners
Among young persons, declining condom use trends in many countries, high prevalences of chlamydia, and recent increases in gonorrhea diagnoses highlight the need to promote condom use. Individual social-cognitive factors and those of partners are known to influence condom use decision-making in steady partnerships, whereas research on casual partnerships is lacking. Our vignette study examined the influence of partner characteristics on condom us…
Risk reconsidered
This study explored how risk in the context of sexual health is conceptualised in research related to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men during a period of major biomedical change, including the scale-up of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) campaign, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic search across Medline (OVID), CINAHL, and Scopus identified studies published and/or with dat…
Engagement of HIV-negative MSM and partners of people with HIV in HIV cure (research)
As the prospect of an HIV cure is gaining prominence, engaging key populations affected by an HIV cure becomes essential. This study examined the engagement of HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) and/or partners of people with HIV (PHIV) in the Netherlands. Interviews were conducted with 19 MSM not in relationships with a partner with HIV and 16 partners of PHIV and were thematically analyzed. Perspectives on the importance of an HIV cur…
Sexually transmitted infection prevention behaviours
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health threat, disproportionately affecting young people, and men who have sex with men. In this narrative review of the current state of behavioural science research on STI prevention, we consider the definition, health impacts, correlates and determinants, and interventions to promote STI prevention behaviour. Research on STI prevention behaviour has extended from a focus on abstinenc…
Chemsex, Anxiety and Depression Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who have Sex with Men Living with HIV
Chemsex is common among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). Although not always categorised as problematic, a link with psychological distress has been reported and might be exacerbated amongst gbMSM living with HIV, as HIV has been associated with anxiety and depression. A cross-sectional online survey of gbMSM living with HIV (n = 359) was performed incorporating the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and sociodemograp…
How Parents’ Ideals are Offset by Uncertainty and Fears
Sexual health counselling by Dutch HIV care providers
To improve sexual health among people living with HIV, sexual health should be addressed during consultations in routine HIV care. The aim of the present study was to investigate to what extent Sexual Health Counselling (SHC) is incorporated into routine Dutch HIV care and to explore differences between physicians and nurses in their practices and views regarding SHC. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among all HIV physicians (N=110) and HIV…
Determinants of PrEP Uptake, Intention and Awareness in the Netherlands
PrEP uptake in the Netherlands is growing but remains at suboptimal levels. Hence, the analysis of hurdles is paramount. Given the initial focus of PrEP provision among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) via a demonstration project that was launched in June 2015, AmPrEP in Amsterdam, and pharmacies in the main urban areas (so called "Randstad", entailing Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, The Hague and Rotterdam), investigating regional differences is nece…
Are Rurality, Area Deprivation, Access to Outside Space, and Green Space Associated with Mental Health during the Covid-19 Pandemic? A Cross Sectional Study (CHARIS-E)
The study investigated if rurality, area deprivation, access to outside space (Study 1), and frequency of visiting and duration in green space (Study 2) are associated with mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and examined if individual demographics (age, gender, COVID-19 shielding status) and illness beliefs have a direct association with mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. A serial, weekly, nationally representative, cross-section…
A serological divide
The expanding HIV risk reduction toolkit increases options for men who have sex men (MSM), but increasing options in combination with different preferences may complicate promoting risk reduction. To investigate what strategies MSM prefer, data of 3310 participants in the online survey “Men & Sexuality” (Median age = 37 years, 320 (9.7%) HIV positive) was analysed. Questions assessed attitudes towards HIV risk reduction strategies. Participants h…
Reducing health disparities
Improving testing uptake among men who have sex with men with a non-western migration background (MSM-NW) is a public health priority, as people who are unaware of their HIV infection are at higher risk of transmitting HIV and are unable to benefit from HIV treatment. Formative semi-structured interviews with 13 MSM-NW assessed key factors for the successful implementation of social network testing with HIV self-tests (SNT-HIVST). Interviews were…
The Rhythm of Risk
HIV risk perception plays a crucial role in the uptake of preventive strategies. We investigated how risk perception and its determinants changed between 1999 and 2018 in an open, prospective cohort of 1323 HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM). Risk perception, defined as the perceived likelihood of acquiring HIV in the past 6 months, changed over time: being relatively lower in 2008-2011, higher in 2012-2016, and again lower in 2017-2018…
Health-related quality of life among adult HIV positive patients
We succeeded in developing a questionnaire that comprehensively assesses HRQOL. HRQOL of the majority of Dutch HIV patients could be improved. The themes strongly influenced each other, therefore insights into any of the themes could inform interventions to improve HRQOL, and increase attention to these themes in routine consultations between patients and health care professionals
Comparing databases
Risk factors from internet surveys were largely similar, but differed from STI clinics, possibly because it involves self-reports rather than diagnoses or because of differences in timing. The difference between the internet surveys and STI clinic data is much less pronounced for having never been tested, suggesting both are appropriate for this outcome. These findings shed light on conclusions drawn from different data sources, as well as the co…
The Impact of Long-Term Health Goals on Sexual Risk Decisions in Impulsive and Reflective Cognitive States
Sizing Opportunity
An abundance of research has investigated the effects of motivational states on size estimates, with initially a strong focus on the functionality of size overestimations. We suggest and found, however, that goal-relevant objects can be over- and underestimated, depending on which size is goal congruent. Specifically, we found that people with a throwing goal estimated (verbally and via visual matching) the size of a basketball as smaller than pe…
