A qualitative exploration of psychosocial challenges of perinatally HIV-infected adolescents and families in Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand has the highest HIV prevalence in Asia, with 9,600 HIV+ adolescents and thousands additional younger HIV+ children (World Bank, 2015; UNICEF, 2015). Studies from other settings suggest perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV+) adolescents are at high risk for mental health problems and engagement in risk behaviors that threaten individual and public health. Yet, few studies exist in Thailand, and few evidence-based psychosocial interventions have…
Motivational Interviewing Targeting Risky Sex in HIV-Positive Young Thai Men Who Have Sex with Men
HIV disclosure and its effect on treatment outcomes in perinatal HIV-infected Thai children
The World Health Organization guideline recommends informing children of their HIV status between the ages of 6-12 years. Primary caregivers of perinatal HIV-infected Thai children ≥6 years were interviewed in order to assess the HIV status disclosure rate. In addition, pill counts of antiretroviral therapy (ART) were performed every three months. CD4 and HIV-RNA were performed every six months. Of the 260 children/adolescents included, the media…
Motivational Interviewing Targeting Risk Behaviors for Youth Living with HIV in Thailand
Poor quality of life among untreated Thai and Cambodian children without severe HIV symptoms
There are limited data on quality of life (QOL) 1 in untreated HIV-infected children who do not have severe HIV symptoms. Moreover, such data do not exist for Asian children. Poor QOL could be a factor in deciding if antiretroviral therapy (ART) should be initiated. Thai and Cambodian children (n=294), aged 1-11 years, naïve to ART, with mild to moderate HIV symptoms and CD4 15-24% were enrolled. Their caregivers completed the Pediatric AIDS Clin…
Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy and Acceptability of Planned Treatment Interruptions in HIV-Infected Children
There have been no paediatric randomised trials describing the effect of planned treatment interruptions (PTIs) of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on adherence, or evaluating acceptability of such a strategy. In PENTA 11, HIV-infected children were randomised to CD4-guided PTIs (n = 53) or continuous therapy (CT, n = 56). Carers, and children if appropriate, completed questionnaires on adherence to ART and acceptability of PTIs. There was no differe…
Attitudes of Thai caregivers of children with HIV infection towards HIV disclosure
We sought to understand the attitude of caregivers of Thai children with HIV towards HIV disclosure by having 49 caregivers complete a disclosure questionnaire. Their children's median age was 6.9 years, with 55% being male. The children were all on antiretrovirals and had a median CD4 of 20%. None of the caregivers had disclosed to their child, and 37% did not intend to. The main reason for not disclosing was fear of causing the child psychologi…
