Treatment outcomes of sexual minority women (SMW) veterans with military sexual trauma (MST)
SMW veterans may particularly benefit from therapies that focus on emotion regulation, interpersonal skills, and/or provide strategies that address day-to-day stressors (e.g., STAIR, PCT). (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
An examination of facilitators and barriers to care receipt among specific groups of LGBTQ+ and cisgender heterosexual veterans
The present study examined rates and factors associated with past-year Veterans Health Administration (VHA) overall healthcare utilization and VA mental health treatment among LGBTQ+ and cisgender heterosexual veterans. Baseline data from a national longitudinal study of LGBTQ+ and cisgender heterosexual veteran VHA users and non-users (N = 1,062) were used in generalized linear models to estimate the predicted prevalence of VHA healthcare utiliz…
A latent class analysis of non-suicidal self-injury and associations with constructs from the interpersonal theory of suicide in a sample of sexual minority young adults
Introduction: Self-directed violence (SDV), comprising both non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide, is elevated among sexual minority populations. NSSI age of onset has been shown to impact severity of SDV outcomes. Components of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS), which includes perceived burdensomeness (PB), thwarted belongingness (TB), and acquired capability for suicide (ACS), may be useful to understanding NSSI subgroups, especia…

PrEP Stigma and logistical barriers remain significant challenges in curtailing HIV transmission among Black and Hispanic/Latinx cisgender sexual minority men and transgender women in the US
Despite advancements in HIV prevention, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), there remain inequities in accessing PrEP among Black and Hispanic/Latinx cisgender sexual minority men and transgender women (SMMTW). Researchers have documented multiple barriers to PrEP uptake, yet the relative impacts of PrEP internalized stigma and logistical barriers (e.g., Cost; time) to PrEP use are understudied. It may be meaningful to investigate potential …
Out of the closet, but not out of the woods
Sexual minoritized individuals engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) at higher rates than their heterosexual peers. Disclosing one's sexual minoritized identity can put one at risk for experiencing discrimination, which is linked to greater engagement in NSSI. However, discrimination has yet to be tested as a mechanism linking sexual identity disclosure to NSSI. Understanding how sexual identity disclosure impacts NSSI has the potential to in…

The interplay of familial warmth and LGBTQ+ specific family rejection on LGBTQ+ adolescents’ self‐esteem
INTRODUCTION: Our study sought to assess the interplay of family dynamics, namely familial warmth and LGBTQ+ specific rejection, and its association to self-esteem in a non-probabilistic sample of LGBTQ+ adolescents in the United States. METHODS: Stratified by (1) cisgender and (2) transgender and non-binary LGBTQ+ adolescents (N = 8774), we tested multivariable regression analyses to assess the association between familial warmth and LGBTQ+ spec…
Unique risk factors for suicide attempt among bisexual/pansexual versus gay/lesbian individuals
Introduction The present study examined whether sexual identity (bisexual/pansexual versus gay/lesbian) moderated associations between risk factors and lifetime suicide attempt (SA).Method Community/college adults who identified as sexual minorities (N = 231) completed a survey examining suicide-related risk factors. Results Greater discrimination and less social support from friends and significant others were associated with greater odds of life…
The negative impact of Covid-19 on sexual minority young adults
Recent studies have demonstrated that the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to increases in depression for sexual minority people. However, there has been limited attention to whether its negative impact differs across subgroups of sexual minority people or to whether its negative impact is prospectively associated with increases in depressive symptoms. To address these gaps, the present study examined demographic differences in the negative impa…
The roles of discrimination and social support in the associations between outness and mental health outcomes among sexual minorities
Compared to heterosexual individuals, sexual minorities exhibit elevated risk for depression and borderline personality disorder (BPD). One psychosocial factor relevant to sexual minority mental health is outness, or the degree to which an individual discloses or conceals their sexual orientation. Previous findings are mixed regarding whether outness is associated with better or worse mental health, likely because outness can have positive conseq…
Sexual Minority Status and Psychological Risk for Suicide Attempt
The current study examined the relation between sexual minority status, social support, emotion dysregulation, and suicide attempt in a community sample. A total of 388 community and college adults completed a one-time survey examining self-injury and suicidality. Findings demonstrated that that social support and emotion regulation, independently and in sequence, mediated the relation between sexual minority status and suicide attempt. The rever…
Emotion regulation is associated with PTSD and depression among female adolescent survivors of childhood sexual abuse
Mediation analyses showed that emotion regulation difficulties were associated with both PTSD and depressive symptoms rather than fitting a unidirectional model. These findings are consistent with and extend previous research and highlight the importance of emotion regulation in adolescent survivors of sexual abuse. (PsycINFO Database Record
