Emerging use of oral nicotine pouches among Canadian adolescents
Inequitable Changes in School Connectedness During the Ongoing Covid ‐19 Pandemic in a Cohort of Canadian Adolescents
BACKGROUND: We examined whether subgroups of adolescents experienced disparate changes in school connectedness-a robust predictor of multiple health outcomes-from before the COVID-19 pandemic to the first full school year following pandemic onset. METHODS: We used 2 waves of prospective survey data from 7178 students attending 41 Canadian secondary schools that participated during the 2019-2020 (T1; pre-COVID-19 onset) and 2020-2021 (T2; ongoing …
Adolescents’ impairment due to climate anxiety is associated with self-efficacy and behavioral engagement
The findings are useful to identify and support vulnerable groups that are more likely to experience impairment due to climate anxiety. The feeling of climate self-efficacy was not well developed among some groups of adolescents. Improving adolescents' beliefs in their capacity to help address climate change may be a key strategy to promote pro-environmental actions. As the threat of climate change increases, it will be important to follow the ev…
Exploring the cross-sectional association between the strength of school vaping policies and student vaping behaviours using data from the 2021–2022 Compass Study
The STPI quickly identified components of school vaping policies that were missing. The overall score of most school vaping policies in our sample was low and most school vaping policies lacked many important components. Future studies should explore factors associated with adolescent vaping and identify effective prevention measures
The Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 Nunavik Health Survey
Information from this survey is being used to update health services and programs in the region and for the development of health policies and public health interventions to tackle key health-related issues faced by Nunavimmiut. Drawing lessons from challenges and successes encountered in Qanuilirpitaa? 2017, this survey paved the way to the upcoming Inuit-led Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey to be conducted every 5 years throughout Inui…
Pre- and postnatal exposure to legacy environmental contaminants and sensation seeking in Inuit adolescents from Nunavik
Despite extensive evidence from cohort studies linking exposure to lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to numerous cognitive outcomes in children and adolescents, very few studies addressed reward sensitivity, a key dimension of emotional regulation. The present study aimed to examine associations between pre- and postnatal exposure to these environmental neurotoxicants and sensation seeking, a behavioral feature of rewar…
Exploring ambivalence toward pregnancy among young Inuit women
Ambivalence toward pregnancy is an important predictor of early pregnancy as documented in diverse Western societies. Inuit women from Nunavik, a northern region of Quebec, Canada, experience a high rate of early pregnancy, yet no study has explored their attitudes toward pregnancy. Grounded in a participatory approach, this study aimed to explore ambivalence toward pregnancy, among other pregnancy-related attitudes, and identify themes underlyin…
Sociocultural determinants of alcohol and cannabis use and misuse among Nunavimmiut
Key determinants of substance use relevant to Inuit culture were identified. Results are in line with our Inuit partners' experience in their communities and are coherent with current land-based interventions implemented in Nunavik. A thorough understanding of substance use contexts and related stressors should guide the content and implementation of substance use programs in Nunavik
Smoking cessation attempts and successes among Nunavimmiut
Despite many attempts reported by participants, regional partners of this study underlined that successful smoking cessation remains a challenge for many Nunavimmiut. Key differences were identified in approaches and determinants of smoking cessation attempts, but most smokers did not use cessation aids. These results are in line with the experience of the Inuit partners of this study and can inform targeted public health interventions to support…
Profiles of childhood adversities in Inuit from Nunavik
Childhood adversities among Nunavimmiut do not occur in isolation and experiencing multiple forms of childhood adversities predicts lower socioeconomic status, support, and community involvement in adulthood. Implications for the planning of health and community services in Nunavik are discussed
Support for mask use as a Covid-19 public health measure among a large sample of Canadian secondary school students
During the year following the beginning of the pandemic, most students supported the required use of masks in schools and wearing masks in indoor public spaces. Improving knowledge around the effectiveness of masks appears likely to have the largest impact on mask support in adolescent populations among the factors studied
Sociocultural factors in relation to mental health within the Inuit population of Nunavik
Although limited by their cross-sectional character, these analyses, based on the community component of the Qanuilirpitaa?, suggest that strengthening of family and community cohesion, and support of regular hunting and fishing deserve further attention as potential cumulative preventive avenues for Inuit mental health
The psychosocial dimension of housing in Nunavik
Overcrowding is associated with lower levels of perceived social support, which is a key component of health for the general population and for Nunavimmiut. Future research should examine the factors creating stronger associations between overcrowding and lower social support for men and older adults
Understanding Sexual Health Indicators During Adolescence
Examining the impact of the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic period on youth cannabis use
During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic period, there does not appear to be a detrimental effect on youth cannabis use, when adjusted for age-related changes. Further prospective research is needed to explore the impact of the ongoing pandemic response on youth cannabis use onset and progression
Sex‐Related Differences in Adolescent Cannabis Use
BACKGROUND: Boys use cannabis at a younger age and more frequently than girls. It has been suggested these sex differences might vary according to students' relationship to school. We explored whether the association between sex and adolescents' cannabis use varies among schools and according to students' school connectedness. METHODS: The study population consisted of all students from 11 secondary schools in the greater Québec City area. The sa…
Food insecurity and psychological distress in Inuit adolescents of Nunavik
Objective: The present study aims at measuring the association between household food insecurity and psychological distress in adolescents in Inuit communities, concurrently and overtime from childhood to adolescence. Design: The study used measures of internalising behaviours (anxiety, withdrawn attitude, somatic complaints and depression) as indicators of psychological distress during adolescence, a concurrent measure of household food insecuri…
Anemia, iron status, and associated protective and risk factors among children and adolescents aged 3 to 19 years old from four First Nations communities in Quebec
Interventions fostering healthier food environments as well as higher consumption of traditional meats and foods naturally rich in vitamin C, which is known to enhance iron absorption, and fighting inflammation could contribute to decrease the high prevalence of anemia and ID in this young Indigenous population
Drinking motives supporting binge drinking of Inuit adolescents
Typology of Canadian Alcohol Users
Objectives: The aim of this paper is to propose a multidimensional typology of drinking in Canada according to use, contexts, and motivations to drink, and to explore the extent to which these profiles are associated with gender and age. Methods: Data are drawn from the 2005 Canadian Survey as part of the project “Gender, Alcohol, and Culture: An International Study.” The subsample consisted of 876 men and 848 women. Multiple correspondence analy…
