What ails tuberculosis notification from the private sector in urban India
Background: Tuberculosis (TB) case reporting is vital for national and subnational surveillance and is mandated in India since 2012. All health providers, public and private, must report through the web-based system, "Nikshay." The prevalence: notification ratio from 2019 to 2021 was 2.84 (prevalence was almost 3 times the notification), suggesting under-notification. This study explores the experiences, identifies barriers and facilitators, and …
The roles of the general practitioner and sexual health centre in HIV testing
GPs have a pivotal role in HIV testing in less urbanised areas further away from the SHC, and among some population groups. A relatively high incidence often follows relatively high testing rates. Opportunities to improve HIV testing have been found for migrants, lower-educated individuals, in areas less urbanised areas and further away from GP/SHC. Strategies include additional targeted testing, via for example SHC branch locations and outreach …

Development of a TB vaccine trial site in Africa and lessons from the Ebola experience
Tuberculosis is the deadliest infection of our time. In contrast, about 11,000 people died of Ebola between 2014 and 2016. Despite this manifest difference in mortality, there is now a vaccine licensed in the United States and by the European Medicines Agency, with up to 100% efficacy against Ebola. The developments that led to the trialing of the Ebola vaccine were historic and unprecedented. The single licensed TB vaccine (BCG) has limited effi…
Behavioral interventions to reduce HIV risk behavior for MSM and transwomen in Southeast Asia
Are condom-promotion interventions reaching internal migrants in China? Integrated evidence from two cross-sectional surveys
Behavioral interventions containing behavior change techniques (BCTs) that do not reach the target populations sufficiently will fail to accomplish their desired outcome. To guide sexually transmitted infection prevention policy for internal migrants in China, this study examines the extent to which BCTs aiming at increasing condom use reach the migrants and investigates the preference of the target population for these techniques among 364 migra…

Cultural tailoring to promote hepatitis B screening in Turkish Dutch
UNLABELLED: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are an important health problem in Turkish migrants in the Netherlands. This study describes the effectiveness of a culturally tailored internet intervention promoting HBV screening in Turkish migrants. METHODS: Turkish migrants, aged 16-40 years old, could participate in an online intervention offering either: (i) behaviourally plus culturally tailored (BCT) information; (ii) behaviourally tailored …
Q fever in the Netherlands
During future outbreaks of (zoonotic) infectious diseases, it will be important to instil a realistic sense of vulnerability by providing the public with accurate information on the risk of becoming infected. This should be given in addition to information about the severity of the disease, the efficacy of measures, and instructions for minimising infection risk with appropriate, feasible preventative measures. Furthermore, public information sho…
HIV Risk and Prevention Behaviors in Men Who Have Sex With Men and Women
Social-Cognitive and Socio-Cultural Predictors of Hepatitis B Virus-Screening in Turkish Migrants, the Netherlands
Increasing girls’ knowledge about human papillomavirus vaccination with a pre-test and a national leaflet
Reading the information leaflet had a positive effect on knowledge, even more so when boosted by a pre-test measurement. However, knowledge on the degree and duration of protection against cervical cancer remained limited. Focusing girls' attention on important aspects before they start reading the leaflet (e.g. by including a quiz on the first page) may serve to raise their awareness of these aspects
Changes in smoking, sports participation and overweight
Development of a culturally tailored Internet intervention promoting hepatitis B screening in the Turkish community in the Netherlands
Hepatitis B virus infections are an important health problem in the Turkish community in the Netherlands. Screening for hepatitis B should be promoted through public health interventions, which take into account the socio-cultural and behavioural determinants that influence screening. The Intervention Mapping protocol was used to develop a culturally tailored Internet intervention for first-generation Turkish immigrants in Rotterdam, aged 16-40 y…
Determinants of intention to get tested for STI/HIV among the Surinamese and Antilleans in the Netherlands
The strong correlation and predictive power of subjective norms on the intention to get tested for STI/HIV, endorses the importance of focusing on community-based intervention rather than focusing on personal determinants, to change the present perceptions and attitudes towards testing. Health promoting programs should be aimed at promoting open communication regarding sexuality and testing. Stimulating each other to get tested frequently could a…
Perceived risk, anxiety, and behavioural responses of the general public during the early phase of the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the Netherlands
Decreasing trends over time in perceived severity and anxiety are consistent with the reality: the clinical picture of influenza turned out to be mild in course of time. Although (inter)national health authorities initially overestimated the case fatality rate, the public stayed calm and remained to have a relatively high intention to comply with preventive measures

Awareness, knowledge and self-reported test rates regarding Hepatitis B in Turkish-Dutch
This study shows low levels of hepatitis B awareness and knowledge in the Turkish community in Rotterdam. Self-reported test rates are lower in people who are not currently married, and in those who have low levels of awareness and knowledge. Especially, knowledge about the consequences of hepatitis B, such as liver cancer, was lacking. Therefore, a health promotion intervention should foremost raise awareness, and increase knowledge on the serio…
Effects of a short individually tailored counselling session for HIV prevention in gay and bisexual men receiving Hepatitis B vaccination
The fifteen-minute individually tailored counselling session was not only well accepted but also had a protective effect on risk behaviour after a follow-up of six months
Hepatitis B screening in the Turkish-Dutch population in Rotterdam, the Netherlands; qualitative assessment of socio-cultural determinants
This study identified relevant socio-cultural themes related to hepatitis B screening, which may serve to customize interventions aimed at the promotion of voluntary hepatitis B screening in the Turkish-Dutch population in the Netherlands
Black–White Differences in Infectious Disease Mortality in the United States
Objectives. This study determined the degree to which Black–White differences in infectious disease mortality are explained by income and education and the extent to which infectious diseases contribute to Black–White differences in all-cause mortality. Methods. A sample population of the National Longitudinal Mortality Study from 1979 through 1981 was analyzed and followed up through 1989. Results. Infectious disease mortality among Blacks was h…

The Perinatal Mortality Rate as an Indicator of Quality of Care in International Comparisons
The perinatal mortality rate is used as an indicator of the quality of antenatal and perinatal care, yet uncritical application of this indicator in international comparisons can be misleading. The perinatal mortality rate depends on a number of factors and important determinants that need to be assessed separately before reaching conclusions about quality-of-care issues. This article provides a conceptual model of the construction of the perinat…
