In biogeography, as in other parts of physical geography, it has become conventional wisdom to assert that a change in the scale of analysis necessitates a change in explanatory factors. Vegetation changes over the past 80 years in the high elevations of Yosemite National Park were identified with 59 scenes originally photographed at the turn of the century and rephotographed in 1984 and 1985. The composition of breeding-bird communities, as represented by the relative importance of foraging guilds, is different for vegetation of differing structures. We identified seven vegetation types and the character of the bird community associated with each.
