The World Bank’s Systems Approach for Better Education Results (SABER) purports to benchmark developing country education systems against global best practices. SABER covers 13 topics, called “domains,” and has produced over 16,000 indicators of what the Bank considers best practice and applied them in over 130 countries. It was only a matter of time, but it's about time. Contradictions in the Role of Professor as Activist
Case studies of the author's involvement in political activities are presented. These are drawn upon to discuss issues raised by Foucault, Gramsci and others about the social roles of intellectuals. The professoriate is conceived to experience a contradiction, partly couched in terms of academic freedom as a “liberating right” versus an “immobilizing chain.” The author urges the professoriate to become activist in order to avoid their assimilatio…
