  • “Now that the baby is out, I can be vaccinated”

Open Access•Angela Koech, Onesmus Wanje et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective in pregnancy, but vaccine hesitancy limits uptake and effectiveness. This study explored COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in pregnancy in Kilifi, coastal Kenya, to elicit reasons for vaccine hesitancy and acceptance, and to compile misconceptions around vaccination in pregnancy. Twenty-three in-depth interviews were conducted with pregnant women, mothers who had given birth in the previous 2 years and health wor…

  • Leveraging big data for improving the estimation of close to reality travel time to obstetric emergency services in urban low- and middle-income settings

    Open Access•Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas, Peter M Macharia et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Maternal and perinatal mortality remain huge challenges globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where >98% of these deaths occur. Emergency obstetric care (EmOC) provided by skilled health personnel is an evidence-based package of interventions effective in reducing these deaths associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Until recently, pregnant women residing in urban areas have been considered to have good access to ca…

  • Interactions between the Physical and Social Environments with Adverse Pregnancy Events Related to Placental Disorders—A Scoping Review

Open Access•Yolisa Prudence Dube, Newton Nyapwere et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

More evidence is needed to determine the relationships between the environment and placental function in Africa. The results show that understanding the nature of the relationship between social determinants of health (SDH) and placental health outcomes plays a pivotal role in understanding the risk in the heterogenous communities in Africa

  • Guidelines for creating framework data for GIS analysis in low‐ and middle‐income countries

Open Access•Prestige Tatenda Makanga, Nadine Schuurman et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2016•Referencias: 25

Key Messages While some framework data are available in LMICs, there is a lack of coordinated effort to create and share these data to support health GIS research in these settings. Manual digitizing can be used to generate framework data, and is increasingly becoming cheaper and faster due to widely available free satellite imagery and open mapping standards that allow distributed data capture. Efforts to create framework data should be done in …

  • Community perceptions of risk factors for interpersonal violence in townships in Cape Town, South Africa

Open Access•Prestige Tatenda Makanga, Nadine Schuurman et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2015

Interpersonal violence is a major contributor to the burden of disease globally, and in South Africa, it is the leading cause of injury. There is an emerging consensus that the development of actionable policy and effective prevention strategies for interpersonal violence requires an understanding of the contextual matters that elevate risk for interpersonal violence. The objective of this study was to explore community perceptions of risks for i…

  • Towards Effective City Planning—The Case of Cape Town in Identifying Potential Housing Land

    Open Access•Mercy Brown-Luthango, Prestige Tatenda Makanga et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Forum•2012

  • A participatory learning approach for the development of a maternal mobile health technology in Zimbabwe

Israel Mbekezeli Dabengwa, Zibusiso Nyati-Jokomo et al.

Participatory Learning Approaches (PLAs) were used in identifying community expectations and needs for the introduction of the RoadMApp mHealth software (a geographically enabled mHealth technology which would link pregnant women to transportation to health facilities) in Kwekwe District, Zimbabwe. The sampling frame included different demographic groups which voluntarily took part in the study. 84 participants took part in the study. Chapati vis…
