  • First dating of a rock painting in Ẓufār (Sultanate of Oman)

    Open Access•M W Rowe, Jean-Loïc Le Quellec et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Referencias: 10

We successfully measured four radiocarbon dates on two specimens of a black geometric rock painting with a fragment in jeopardy of naturally spalling off in the wall of a rock shelter in the Ẓufār region, in the south of the Sultanate of Oman. Extraction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) for radiocarbon dating of the binder in the black pigment of the rock painting specimen was conducted in the plasma oxidation laboratory at the Office of Archeological S…

  • Premature Oxidation During Argon Plasma Cleaning of Water-Rich Radiocarbon Samples

Open Access•J Royce Cox, Eric Blinman et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Referencias: 13

Plasma oxidation for 14 C sampling utilizes low-pressure (133 Pa), low-energy ( 2 -plasmas generating CO 2 for AMS dating. O 2 -plasmas on empty chambers remove organic contamination. When clean, a new specimen is inserted and Ar-plasmas dislodge adsorbed atmospheric CO 2 from surfaces. Finally, O 2 -plasmas oxidize organic materials to CO 2 for AMS analysis. During some Ar-plasmas we observed anomalous pressure increases and unexpectedly high CO…

  • Lead and Zinc Pigmented Mural Paint

    M W Rowe, Marie D Desrochers et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 24

At Lowry Pueblo, small fragments of painted plaster are all that remain of a bold white step pattern mural that once decorated Kivas A and B. We used the following analytical techniques to study these fragments: visual microscopic analysis, portable X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, powder X-ray diffraction, and radiocarbon dating. We identified zinc oxide and lead sulfate pigment miner…

Wyoming State Parks recovered a large chunk of the Medicine Lodge Creek Archaeological Site cliff wall, which had fallen away, with rock paintings on it. A sample from one of the paintings was dated to 800 BP with the Plasma Oxidation dating method. Comparison to regional sites suggests the dated painting is part of the Foothills Abstract tradition or a variant of the Columbia Plateau tradition

  • Lamarque and Olsen on Literature and Truth

    M W Rowe•CHAPTER•Philosophy and Literature•2017

This chapter argues that this account of literature and truth is seriously at variance with the way writers, critics and readers behave in the real world. In Truth, Fiction and Literature, Peter Lamarque and Stein Haugom Olsen defend a no-truth theory of literature, and argue that the concepts of truth, knowledge and insight play no ineliminable role in accounting for literature&s;s value. Lamarque and Olsen claim that general propositions assert…

Open Access•Jon Russ, Mary Pohl et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2017•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 18

Oxtotitlán Cave paintings have been considered among the earliest in Mesoamerica on stylistic grounds, but confirmation of this hypothesis through absolute dating has not been attempted until now. We describe the application of advanced radiocarbon strategies developed for situations such as caves with high carbon backgrounds. Using a low-temperature plasma oxidation system, we dated both the ancient paint and the biogenic rock coatings that cove…

  • Datations des peintures rupestres dans les Amériques

    Open Access•M W Rowe•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

  • Dating of Rock Paintings in the Americas

    Open Access•M W Rowe•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

Pictograph dating has been commonplace for two decades. Many good results have been obtained. But, verification needs to become more frequent in rock art dating studies – at least until a new dating method has been proven. Although I speak here only about pictographs, it applies to petroglyphs as well, perhaps even more so. How can we know we are getting accurate dates? Standards are used to verify experimental techniques. However, there is only …

Uniformity of format does not guarantee uniformity of content. Readers of David Davies's Aesthetics and Literature, in Continuum's new ‘Aesthetics and . . .’ series, will know that it is a lively and reliable guide to most contemporary disputes in the analytic philosophy of literature: the nature of literature, fiction, fictional characters, literature and the emotions, the cognitive value of literature, and so forth. While equally impressive, An…

  • Radiocarbon dates for pictographs in Ignatievskaya Cave, Russia

    Open Access•Karen L Steelman, M W Rowe et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2002•Citada por: 17

Samples from three charcoal pictographs at Ignatievskaya Cave, in the southern Ural Mountains of Russia, have been radiocarbon dated. An advanced antiquity was expected, with some paintings thought to be more than 10,000 years old, as suggested by the imagery. One charcoal painting, for example, resembles a mammoth. The radiocarbon date of that motif, however, dates only to 7370±50 BP. If that motif actually represents a live mammoth, it places m…

    Open Access•R A Armitage, James E Brady et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2001•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 25

Radiocarbon age determinations are presented on three hieroglyphic texts from Naj Tunich cave in Guatemala containing Maya calendar dates. The ages obtained are on average 110-140 years older than the calendar dates. Several possible reasons are discussed for this discrepancy: one that is applicable to all radiocarbon dates on charcoal, one that applies to rock paintings, and one that is specific for the tropics. Possible problems with the ages a…

Plato is a central figure in Arnold's prose work, but up until the age of thirty-five Arnold saw himself as primarily a poet, and here the Platonic influence is minimal. 'Quiet Work' contains hints of Plotinus, and 'In Utrumque Paratus' explores the Plotinian idea of the world as an emanation from …

The ages obtained are on average 110-140 years older than the calendar dates. Several possible reasons are discussed for this discrepancy: one that is applicable to all radiocarbon dates on charcoal, one that applies to rock paintings, and one that is specific for the tropics. Possible problems with the ages a…

Plasma oxidation was used to obtain radiocarbon dates on six different materials from a naturally mummified baby bundle from the Lower Pecos River region of southwest Texas. This bundle was selected because it was thought to represent a single event and would illustrate the accuracy and precision of the plasma oxidation method. Five of the materials were clearly components of the original bundle with 13 dates combined to yield a weighted average …

  • AMS Dates from Four Late Prehistoric Period Rock Art Sites in West Central Montana

In 2002, eight pigment samples were collected from three rock art sites in the Big Belt Mountains of west central Montana. Samples from Hellgate Gulch (24BW9), Avalanche Mouth (24BW19), and the Gates of the Mountains (24LC27) were dated using plasma-chemical extraction and accelerator mass spectrometry. The dates were statistically indistinguishable with ages of 11701 ± 45, 1225 ± 50, and 1280 1 ± 50 B.P. When calibrated, these ages range from 65…

  • Direct radiocarbon dating of megalithic paints from north-west Iberia

    Open Access•Karen L Steelman, Fernando Carrera Ramírez et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2005•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 11

Using plasma chemistry, carbon was extracted from charcoal paint samples collected from megalithic monuments in north-west Iberia. Nine accelerator mass spectrometric radiocarbon dates on these paints establish their age to be within 1000 14C years of each other, centred at approximately 5000 BP. These radiocarbon ages for megalithic paintings fall within the proposed time period for north-west Iberian megalithic culture. Multiple layers of paint…
