  • Steps towards a therapeutic artificial intelligence

    Open Access•W Mccarty•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2024•Referencias: 40

Whether artificial intelligence might benefit human well-being in every sense is an open question. I consider it in the following essay, first putting to one side standard accounts of ‘official AI’, then deriving an ‘unofficial’ counterpart from the evidence of newspaper accounts and magazine features from ca. 1945–1965. Unsurprisingly, these demonstrate a bending of artificial intelligence to military and industrial purposes, hence the enormity …

  • Modeling, ontology and wild thought

    Open Access•W Mccarty•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 30

The question at the heart of this essay begins with a curious mid-twentieth-century co-occurrence in the Anglo-American world: on the one hand, of the invention and transformative spread of digital computing; on the other hand, the return from philosophical exile of "ontology" and its subsequent pluralization. What makes this co-occurrence interesting is, first, the machine's requirement of a "model"-and so an ontology-of the domain to be affecte…

Even a brief sketch of the history of simulation, given here for physics, climatology and biology, reveals from the perspective of the humanities possibilities for expansive and adventurous imaginative work. Despite the fact that simulation as we know it began its rapid and transformative growth with digital computing 70 years ago, it is only within the last decade that it has received critical attention in the humanities. Why this is so, given t…

When the understanding of scientific models and archetypes comes to be regarded as a reputable part of scientific culture, the gap between the sciences and the humanities will have been partly filled. For exercise of the imagination, with all its promises and its dangers, provides a common ground. The author concentrates on the term "modeling" because that is the predominate term in scientific practice. Then, the author provides an extended examp…

Humanities computing is an ‘interdiscipline’ concerned with the application of computing to the arts and letters. Although it has been practised since the late 1940s, it has only recently begun to gain institutional recognition and a measure of self-awareness. In this contribution to the vigorous debate among practitioners, I argue for a common methodological ground shared by computer using scholars and students across the disciplines of the huma…
