Achieving Equity in the Reach of Smoking Cessation Services Within the NCI Cancer Moonshot-Funded Cancer Center Cessation Initiative
Background: Ensuring equitable access to smoking cessation services for cancer patients is necessary to avoid increasing disparities in tobacco use and cancer outcomes. In 2017, the Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) funded National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Centers to integrate evidence-based smoking cessation programs into cancer care. We describe the progress of C3I Cancer Centers in expanding the reach of cessation servic…
Pragmatic Application of the RE-AIM Framework to Evaluate the Implementation of Tobacco Cessation Programs Within NCI-Designated Cancer Centers
Tobacco cessation after cancer diagnosis leads to better patient outcomes. However, tobacco treatment services are frequently unavailable in cancer care settings, and multilevel implementation challenges can impede uptake of new programs. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) dedicated Cancer Moonshot funding through the Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) for NCI-Designated Cancer Centers to implement or enhance the implementation of tobacco …
Financial incentives to Medicaid smokers for engaging tobacco quit line treatment
Modelling suggests that financial incentives in the amount of $20 per call for taking the first four quit line calls and $70 for taking a fifth quit line call maximise ROI to engage low-income smokers with evidence-based smoking cessation treatment
Receipt of evidence-based brief cessation interventions by health professionals and use of cessation assisted treatments among current adult cigarette-only smokers
Receipt of the '5 A's' intervention was associated with a significant increase in patients' use of recommended counseling and medication for cessation. It is important for health professionals to deliver all 5 A's when conducting brief cessation interventions with patients who smoke
Cigarette Smoking, Desire to Quit, and Tobacco-Related Counseling Among Patients at Adult Health Centers
Objectives. We determined cigarette smoking prevalence, desire to quit, and tobacco-related counseling among a national sample of patients at health centers. Methods. Data came from the 2009 Health Center Patient Survey and the 2009 National Health Interview Survey. The analytic sample included 3949 adult patients at health centers and 27 731 US adults. Results. Thirty-one percent of health center patients were current smokers, compared with 21% …
Tobacco Cessation Quitline Spending in 2005 and 2006
Tobacco cessation telephone quitlines are an effective population-wide strategy for smoking cessation, but funding for this service varies widely. State-level factors may explain this difference. Data from the 2005 and 2006 North American Quitline Consortium surveys and from publicly available sources were analyzed to identify factors that predict higher levels of per capita quitline funding. The best-fitting multivariate model comprised higher p…
Stealing a March in the 21st Century
Tobacco use in the United States has declined dramatically over the past 50 years, with the prevalence of cigarette smoking falling from about 42% of all adults to less than 20% by 2007. If this rate of decline continues, smoking could be eliminated in the United States by 2047. Framed in military parlance, we may be halfway through a 100-year war against the leading public health killer of our time. We describe factors that have contributed to p…
Smoking-Cessation Media Campaigns and Their Effectiveness Among Socioeconomically Advantaged and Disadvantaged Populations
Objectives. We examined whether the impact of televised smoking cessation ads differed by a population’s education and income. Methods. We used longitudinal data from the Wisconsin Behavioral Health Survey, a statewide sample of 452 adult smokers who were interviewed in 2003 to 2004 and followed up 1 year later. Logistic regression was used to assess whether baseline recall of secondhand smoke ads and “keep trying to quit” ads was associated with…
Do state characteristics matter? State level factors related to tobacco cessation quitlines
State level factors appear to play a part in whether states had established quitlines by mid-2004 and the amount of per capita quitline funding
Addiction Motivation Reformulated
This article offers a reformulation of the negative reinforcement model of drug addiction and proposes that the escape and avoidance of negative affect is the prepotent motive for addictive drug use. The authors posit that negative affect is the motivational core of the withdrawal syndrome and argue that, through repeated cycles of drug use and withdrawal, addicted organisms learn to detect interoceptive cues of negative affect preconsciously. Th…
Preventing 3 Million Premature Deaths and Helping 5 Million Smokers Quit
In August 2002, the Subcommittee on Cessation of the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health (ICSH) was charged with developing recommendations to substantially increase rates of tobacco cessation in the United States. The subcommittee’s report, A National Action Plan for Tobacco Cessation, outlines 10 recommendations for reducing premature morbidity and mortality by helping millions of Americans stop using tobacco. The plan includes both evi…
Insurance Coverage of Smoking Cessation Treatment for State Employees
Public health experts recommend that health insurance include coverage for smoking cessation treatment as an evidence-based strategy to reduce smoking. As employers, states can implement this policy for more than 5 million individuals nationwide. This study identified the extent to which states require smoking cessation treatment insurance coverage for their employees; of 45 states, 29 required coverage for at least 1 US Public Health Service (PH…

Impact of Prior Nicotine Replacement Therapy on Smoking Cessation Efficacy
Bupropion SR is effective in promoting smoking abstinence regardless of prior NRT use
The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research Smoking Cessation Clinical Practice Guideline
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States, and the health benefits of quitting smoking are substantial. Nevertheless, over 25% of American adults (48 million individuals) continue to smoke, and the vast majority of quit attempts are unsuccessful. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recently addressed the smoking problem by conducting a 2-year research project that was published as the Smok…
Does over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapy improve smokers' life expectancy
Compared with [symbol: see text] availability of nicotine replacement therapy, OTC availability would result in more successful quitters, fewer smoking-attributable deaths, and increased life expectancy for current smokers
Overview of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research guideline
I am honoured to be a part of this panel. Our goal is to provide you with a perspective that is both realistic and positive. That perspective is based around the unique opportunity that managed care organisations (MCOs) have before them. Managed care organisations have an opportunity to help their enrollees quit smoking—an opportunity not only to save lives, but also to decrease the extraordinary morbidity that results from tobacco addiction. Fin…

The reliability of self-reported cigarette consumption in the United States
To investigate the possibility that self-reported smoking is not a valid measure for assessing trends in smoking prevalence, we compared total self-reported cigarette consumption with the adjusted consumption data from cigarette excise taxes as reported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the period 1974 through 1985. Self-reported consumption was calculated by using data from the National Health Interview Surveys (NHIS) for adults and…
