David Michael Smith, William G. Cavanagh and Angelos Papadopoulos, The Wider Island of Pelops. Studies in Prehistoric Aegean Pottery in Honour of Professor Christopher Mee
The core of this collection of 17 contributions is made up of papers presented at a conference organised by two of Chris Mee‘s former students and held at the British School at Athens in 2017 to honour his memory; other papers were offered by friends and colleagues who had worked with him. The result may be a bit more wide-ranging than the original conference was, but this is a positive outcome, for despite the impression that might be given by t…
Philippa M. Steele, Exploring writing systems and practices in the Late Bronze Age Aegean
This book represents the work conducted by the author as principal investigator of the project Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems (CREWS), funded by the European Research Council, and is the culmination of a series of CREWS open access volumes published with Oxbow Books. As the title and Introduction make clear, it is concerned with the Aegean Bronze Age scripts, and particularly with the interrelated problems of the relation…
Susan E. Poole. A Consideration of Gender Roles and Relations in the Aegean Bronze Age Interpreted from Gestures and Proxemics in Art
This is a difficult book to review, partly because of the sheer mass of material covered. Besides the figures in the text, there are many more in the Part II downloadable from BAR (this contains 3 appendices listing figures from frescoes (905), from glyptic material (157), and three-dimensional items (31) that were considered, all given some description, also 17 tables). Surprisingly, only a few figurines out of the many from Aegean contexts rece…

Lefkandi Phase I, With Special Reference to the Pottery, Its Chronological Position, and Its Anatolian Connections
The aim of this article is to publish David French's manuscript on Lefkandi Phase I, in as close a form as possible to what he wrote. Some changes have been necessary to improve the presentation of the material, to correct occasional errors, and to conform with BSA stylistic requirements. The material discussed is essentially that from the lowest levels of the ‘Deep Sounding’ in Trench CC. The discussion has four sections. The first section is a …

Sarah C. Murray, The Collapse of the Mycenaean Economy. Imports, Trade and Institutions 1300–700 BCE
This book derives from a PhD dissertation defended at Stanford University in 2013, added to by further research in following years. It treats a topic of considerable importance in any discussion of the degree of continuity between the civilisations of the Aegean Bronze Age and that of the early Greeks, which was becoming well established in the eighth century BC (all dates cited subsequently are BC), and the reality or otherwise of an intervening…
James C. Wright et al., The Mycenaean Settlement on Tsoungiza Hill (Nemea Valley Archaeological Project III)
This pair of volumes complete the publication of the Bronze Age phases of the prehistoric site of Tsoungiza, close to the site of the sanctuary of Zeus at ancient Nemea, which in historical times hosted one of the major four panhellenic festivals of athletic games (Vol. I of the Project published the Early Bronze Age remains)
Chrysanthi Gallou, Death in Mycenaean Laconia. A Silent Place
This substantial study developed out of Gallou’s postdoctoral project on the Mycenaean cemeteries of Epidavros Limera, a site on the east Laconian coast that functioned as a major port in historical times. Hence, it very usefully sorts out the exceptionally complicated history of excavations at that site (generally undertaken in response to repeated tomb robbery) and in Chapter 4 publishes all the pottery in Sparta Museum from the excavations, wh…
The Middle Helladic Pottery of Lefkandi Phases Iv–vi
This paper presents a more detailed account of the pottery of Phases IV–VI in the Middle Helladic (MH) sequence at Lefkandi: Xeropolis than is available in the preliminary report. It is based essentially on an unfinished draft compiled by Roger Howell (the Howell manuscript). After an introduction on the background, there is discussion of the Howell manuscript, and then an analysis of the stratigraphy of Trench CC, the basis for the phasing of th…
‘The Coming of the Greeks’ and All That
Mycenae Revisited Part 4
This is the fourth and final part of the series inspired by the rediscovery in 2003 of two skeletons excavated in 1877 in Shaft Grave VI in Circle A at Mycenae by Panayiotis Stamatakis. The contribution of Stamatakis to the excavations, the discrepancies between his unpublished reports to the Archaeological Society and Schliemann's account, and the reliability of that account, are discussed. This is followed by a survey of what can now be said ab…

Cist graves and Chamber Tombs
The two categories of tomb are defined. Burial practice in Greece from MH onwards is discussed, chamber tombs being established as canonical in LH I, though these are not universal, and cist and pit burials continue. Chamber and tholos tombs occur over a wide area of the mainland in LH II; after LH II, except for children's burials, pits and cists are relatively rare, though they are found in chamber tombs. It is argued that chamber tombs were th…

Parallels and Contrasts in the Bronze Age of the Peloponnese
The provinces of the north‐east Peloponnese, Laconia, and Messenia are chosen for comparison, as likely to have been always the most significant in the Peloponnese. Differences in the observable patterns of site‐distribution are pointed out, which seem to conflict with the models suggested in Bintliff 1977 and to suggest a degree of local variation. the histories of the three provinces through the Bronze Age, so far as they can be outlined, have …
The Definition of Late Helladic I
In a previous article I argued that the one major stratified deposit published as LH I and accepted as such by Furumark, from Korakou, was in fact late LH IIA, and considered the implications of this redating for the development of LH II. If this view is accepted, it raises the question: what, then, is LH I ? In this article I wish to describe what I believe to be LH I; as I am not able to make use of a good closed deposit, I shall rely largely u…
Deconstructing ‘The Sense of Place’? Settlement Systems, Field Survey, and the Historic Record
After a generation of intensive regional surface survey in the Mediterranean lands, it is both necessary and enlightening to evaluate the ways in which this new approach has produced results which either support, or demand modifications to, or directly challenge, previous ideas on the evolution of human settlement systems in this macro-region. Given that many regional survey projects have only recently achieved final publication, or are in the fi…
Late Helladic IIA and IIB
The distinction between L.H. IIA and L.H. IIB as stylistic and historical phases was set out by Furumark over twenty years ago, but the terms have still not come into general use. Instead, L.H. II is treated as a unit, roughly equivalent to the fifteenth century B.C. Yet it is now generally agreed that there was an important historical ‘break’ in the middle of the century, marked by the destruction of many sites in Crete, which roughly coincides …
Pendent Semicircles at Veii
The persistent absence of pendent concentric semicircles in the West is commonly regarded as surprising. MG skyphoi with this motif are among the earliest Greek types at Al Mina, and Boardman has suggested that ‘Euboean workshops may have stopped making them by the time Pithekoussai was founded’, though he later qualified this: ‘I think all it demonstrates is how very little we still know about early colonisation or precolonial days in Italy.’ Th…
