A systematic review investigating emerging trends between Extreme Weather Events (EWEs) and infectious disease outbreaks in South Africa
Introduction: Extreme weather events (EWEs) are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, exacerbating health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Infectious diseases are climate-sensitive, yet microbial dynamics during and after EWEs remain poorly understood. This systematic review examines if there are emerging trends and associations in infectious disease outbreaks and health care following EWEs in South Africa. M…
Improving consumer understanding of dietary health risks using the lens of ultra-processing
Over-consumption of ultra-processed foods is a major barrier to healthier eating, indicating the current food-based dietary guidelines utilised in many countries are not deterring consumption of these foods. A level-of-processing framework that discourages Ultra-processed Food (UPF) consumption represents a potential paradigm shift in communicating dietary risk to consumers and guiding dietary behaviour. This study experimentally compared two inf…
Sneak peek
Objective: To characterise children’s lunchbox contents for food, waste and packaging. Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Lunchboxes were photographed at two time points on the same day: before first morning break to capture food and packaging and post-lunch break to capture food waste. Contents were coded using an audit tool developed using REDCap. Setting: Twenty-three sites across metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia including fo…
Concerned but confused
Calls to reduce ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption through population health strategies such as front-of-pack labelling are increasing. Gaining insight into consumer perceptions may help inform effective strategies in this area. This study explored (i) Australian adults' awareness, understanding, and recognition of UPFs and (ii) their interest in front-of-pack labelling to signpost UPFs. Twelve online focus groups were conducted with 112 Aust…
Australian parents’ attitudes, perceptions and supply of alcohol to adolescents
Parental supply of alcohol to adolescents is associated with increased risk of subsequent adolescent alcohol use and harms, so identifying factors associated with parents’ decision-making is critical. This study examined how parental supply is associated with attitudes toward adolescent alcohol use, perceived norms of parental supply, perceived behavioural control and perceived acceptable age to drink alcohol. A total of 1197 Australian parents w…
Mental health and support for rigorous tobacco control strategies in South Australia
Support for tax-focused strategies was lower among people with MHCs. Retail and product-focused strategies may support equity in public acceptability of tobacco control action. Policy-makers must aim to maximise tobacco endgame support from populations most impacted by tobacco harms when implementing tobacco control strategies. Tax-focused approaches might be enhanced with consultation and advocacy for people with MHCs
Prevalence of parental supply of alcohol to minors
Parental supply of alcohol to minors (i.e. those under the legal drinking age) is often perceived by parents as protective against harms from drinking, despite evidence linking it with adverse alcohol-related outcomes. This systematic review describes the prevalence of parental supply of alcohol, as reported in the international literature. The review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020218754). We searched seven online databases (Medline, Emba…
Which drinkers have changed their alcohol consumption due to energy content concerns? An Australian survey
Results indicate that some sociodemographic groups are changing alcohol consumption for energy-related reasons, but others are not, representing an underutilised opportunity for health promotion communication. Further research should investigate whether messaging to increase awareness of alcohol energy content, including through systems-based policy actions such as nutritional/energy product labelling, would motivate reduced consumption across a …
You can’t just eat 16 teaspoons of sugar so why would you drink 16 teaspoons’ worth of sugar?”
Labels conveying the amount of sugar in a beverage in teaspoons were perceived as highly factual, relatable and interpretable, and as having the greatest potential to impact consumption attitudes and intentions. Further quantitative studies are required to compare the potential effectiveness of the teaspoons of sugar labels in reducing purchasing and consumption behaviour than other alternative warning labels, such as health effects or "high in" …
Adolescents’ knowledge and beliefs regarding health risks of soda and diet soda consumption
Objective: To examine Australian adolescents’ knowledge and beliefs regarding potential health consequences of soda and diet soda consumption and nutritional aspects of soda and explore associations with consumption. Design: A survey utilising a nationally representative sample (stratified two-stage probability design) assessed knowledge of nutritional contents and health consequences of soda, and beliefs regarding health risks of diet soda, and …
Warning labels and interpretive nutrition labels
Effective strategies to reduce free sugar intake are needed. This study examined exposure to a warning label, independently and in conjunction with a Health Star Rating (HSR) label, on the selection of commercially available cold beverages with real decision-making stakes. Participants (N = 511, 47.9% female, mean = 21.7 (SD = 6.1) years) accessed an online convenience store app via an on-campus laptop to select one of 10 beverages (5 sugar-sweet…
Intentions to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption
Objective: There are numerous health effects associated with excess sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption. Interventions aimed at reducing population-level consumption require understanding of the relevant barriers and facilitators. This study aimed to identify the variables with the strongest relationship with intentions to reduce SSB consumption from a suite of variables derived from the literature. Design: Random-digit dialling of landlin…

“I'm not the anti-smoker now. I just don't smoke anymore”
Background: Emerging adulthood presents unique challenges to smoking cessation that are not well understood. During this phase, smoking identities can develop that become obstacles for quitting, particularly in social situations where smoking is accepted and expected. Using a social identity approach, this study explores how social relationships and normative group behaviours can be barriers to transitioning from a smoker to non-smoker identity.M…
Australia’s sugar tale
Objective: To establish high intake of free sugars and its related disease burden as a significant public health challenge in Australia. Design: We discuss five key actions to reduce intake of free sugars tailored to the Australian context. These strategies are informed by reviewing the global scientific evidence on the effectiveness of a range of policy responses to reduce intake of free sugars at the population level. Setting: Australia. Partic…
The bitter and the sweet
This article is part of a broader interdisciplinary project investigating the historical, social, and cultural contexts behind individual and collective differences in taste and consumption. It offers a comparative historical study of nonalcoholic beverage (NAB) consumption in Australia and Japan. Australia and Japan are among the largest NAB consumers in the world, and they have a similar history of progression from brewed tea as the main bevera…
Living Indigenous Heritage
Indigenous peoples always struggle to ensure planning practice is culturally inclusive in identifying and protecting heritage structures and sites. Planners struggle to understand the cultural and spiritual values inherent in heritage and to develop appropriate ways to protect what is often an intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Using traditional Māori food gardens as an example of ICH and a kaupapa Māori research methodology, this paper explores…
I don’t think I'd feel good about myself if I was to give up smoking and go to one of these’
Objective: To explore South Australian (SA) young adult smokers' and ex-smokers' perceptions of e-cigarettes as a possible tool for smoking cessation in a context where only e-cigarettes that do not contain nicotine are legally available.Design: Six focus groups: two groups of five participants each for daily smokers, occasional smokers (less than daily) and ex-smokers. Participants (N = 30, 57% male) were aged between 18 and 25 years; e-cigarett…
Taking the pressure off the spring
While the observed declines in smoking prevalence are likely due to a combination of interventions and cannot be attributed exclusively to antitobacco advertising, the results reinforce the political decision to reinstate the campaign and demonstrate the need for maintained investment to keep downward pressure on smoking rates
Industry use of ‘better-for-you’ features on labels of sugar-containing beverages
Objective To examine the ways in which sugar-containing beverages are being portrayed as ‘better-for-you’ (BFY) via features on product labels. Design Cross-sectional audit of beverage labels. Setting Adelaide, Australia. Data on beverage labels were collected from seventeen grocery stores during September to November 2016. Subjects The content of 945 sugar-containing beverages labels were analysed for explicit and implicit features positioning t…
Can front-of-pack labels influence portion size judgements for unhealthy foods
Objective By clearly conveying the healthiness of a food, front-of-pack (FOP) labels have the potential to influence the portion size considered appropriate for consumption. The present study examined the how the Daily Intake Guide (DIG), Multiple Traffic Lights (MTL) and Health Star Rating (HSR) FOP labels affect judgements of appropriate portion sizes of unhealthy foods compared with when no FOP label is present. Design Respondents viewed mock …
Prevalence, perceptions and predictors of alcohol consumption and abstinence among South Australian school students
An education campaign highlighting the link between alcohol and cancer may have positive flow-on effects for young people, and schools should incorporate this messaging into any alcohol education programs. Consideration should be given to factors that serve to regulate under-aged accessibility of alcohol
Having fewer than 21 teeth associated with poorer general health among South Australians
Missing teeth was associated with poor general health status as measured by EQ-5D-5L disutility. The relationship was especially evident with respect to mobility and pain/discomfort. The findings emphasize the importance of oral health as predictors of general health

Uptake and effectiveness of the Australian telephone Quitline service in the context of a mass media campaign
In the context of a national mass media campaign, this study illustrates that it is possible to bring together differing State based services to provide an accessible, acceptable, and effective quit smoking service
Research in urban history
As in previous years this review is based on a broadly based definition of what constitutes ‘urban history’ and consequently includes theses that have been drawn from a variety of disciplines and interpretative structures. Details of the theses have been drawn from the comprehensive material provided through the Index of Theses located at http://www.theses.com/ and Dissertations International located at http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations . This …
New Zealand's ‘New Order’
Research in urban history
Defining what constitutes urban history has always proved challenging; however, employing this review's usual wide definition has resulted in the identification of theses from a range of disciplines. This review covers theses produced in 2003 and drawn from the Index of Theses located at http://www.theses.com/ and Dissertations International located at http://wwwlib.umi.com/ dissertations. This year for the first time it has become necessary to l…
Research in urban history
Researching and producing this review of theses poses many challenges, the least of which is how to produce a meaningful summary of an abstract that already summarizes some 200–400 pages of detailed research, while avoiding sounding clichéd. However, undertaking this review for four years does give one the opportunity to consider the patterns and changes that have emerged. Thus this article will commence with a short review of the sources of thes…
Research in urban history
In keeping with past experiences, 2005 produced a rich range of 70 theses that address urban history topics. Equally, as in past years, the topics the theses address are marked by diversity that itself is reflective of the nature of the urban experience. As usual the theses reviewed here are drawn from the Index of Theses located at http://www.theses.com/ , which now also features Irish theses, and Dissertations International located at http://ww…
Research in urban history
The writing of this review has been complicated this year due to the fact that it has had to be prepared rather earlier than in the past, which has somewhat skewed the careful construction of statistical comparisons that have been developed over previous years. The problem is compounded by the fact that last year's review was, in turn, also prepared earlier than in previous years, leading to a backlog on 2005 theses to be reported. The change of …
Impact on the Australian Quitline of new graphic cigarette pack warnings including the Quitline number
Introducing graphic cigarette packet warnings and the Quitline number on cigarette packets boosts demand for Quitline services, with likely flow on effects to cessation
Using a quitline plus low-cost nicotine replacement therapy to help disadvantaged smokers to quit
Disadvantaged smokers were easily engaged to call the quitline, particularly when offered subsidised NRT. Disadvantaged smokers using the quitline, with and without subsidised NRT, achieved cessation outcomes comparable to other studies of "mainstream" smokers
Smokers' recall of Australian graphic cigarette packet warnings & awareness of associated health effects, 2005-2008
Overall graphic pack warnings have had the intended impact on smokers. Some have greater impact than others. The implications for policy makers in countries introducing similar warnings are that fresh messaging and visceral images have the greatest impact

What happens when the price of a tobacco retailer licence increases
Licensing of tobacco retailers has received little attention in tobacco control in Australia and internationally. Our data add to the growing body of evidence supporting further regulation of retail sale of tobacco. The results demonstrate that a tobacco licence price increase off a low base is a potentially effective method of reducing tobacco points of sale when consumer demand for cigarette products is low. However, further research is needed …
The silent salesman
Tobacco packs are frequently seen on table-tops in café strips, providing many opportunities for other patrons and passers-by to be incidentally exposed to cigarette brand names and imagery. Use of cigarette cases is rare, suggesting that smokers eventually habituate to pictorial warnings on branded packs and/or find repeated decanting of each newly purchased branded pack into a case to be inconvenient
The effects of television and Internet food advertising on parents and children
Objective The current study examined the impact of television and Internet food advertising on Australian parents and children. Design Parents and their children aged 8 to 14 years were exposed to a television advertisement, an Internet advertisement or a control picture for four commonly advertised energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods. Setting Online web panel survey, Australia. Subjects Parents ( n 1302) and their children aged 8 to 14 years ( n 1…
Personal pack display and active smoking at outdoor café strips
This study demonstrated a sustained reduction in visibility of tobacco products and smoking in public, particularly in the presence of children, from pre-PP to 1 year post-PP. This effect is likely to reduce smoking-related social norms, thereby weakening an important influence on smoking uptake and better supporting quit attempts
You're made to feel like a dirty filthy smoker when you're not, cigar smoking is another thing all together.” Responses of Australian cigar and cigarillo smokers to plain packaging
Non-premium cigarillo smokers appear to have been most exposed and influenced by PP, with cigar smokers less so, especially regular premium cigar smokers who have maintained access to fully branded products
