  • Treatment outcomes among children and adolescents with extensively drug–resistant (XDR) and pre–XDR tuberculosis

Open Access•Jayadeep Patra, Hyacinth Irving et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Extensively drug–resistant (XDR) and pre-XDR- tuberculosis (TB) account for approximately a third of pediatric MDR–TB cases globally. Clinical management is challenging; recommendations are based on limited evidence. We assessed the clinical outcomes for children and adolescents treated for XDR–and pre–XDR–TB. We performed a systematic review and meta–analysis of published studies reporting treatment outcomes for children and adolescents with XDR…

  • Mortality and potential years of life lost attributable to alcohol consumption in Canada in 2005

    Open Access•Kevin D Shield, Benjamin J Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The mortality burden attributable to alcohol consumption for Canada is large, unnecessary, and could be substantially reduced in a short period of time if effective public health policies were implemented. A monitoring system on alcohol consumption is imperative and would greatly assist in planning and evaluating future Canadian public health policies related to alcohol consumption

  • Are Alcohol Prices and Taxes an Evidence-Based Approach to Reducing Alcohol-Related Harm and Promoting Public Health and Safety? A Literature Review

Open Access•Jayadeep Patra, Norman Giesbrecht et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2012

This literature review examines alcohol prices and taxes as potential prevention strategies—examining the links with high-risk drinking and drinking patterns and alcohol-related harm. A literature search of the studies on alcohol price and taxation was conducted using multiple electronic bibliographic databases. Examined outcomes were a) drinking patterns and high risk drinking; and b) harm from alcohol. Fifty-four relevant studies were evaluated…

  • Alcohol-Related Laws and Avoidable Burden and its Costs Due to Motor Vehicle Collisions in Canada

Open Access•Svetlana Popova, Jayadeep Patra et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2011•Referencias: 14

The purpose of this study was to estimate the avoidable alcohol-attributable burden and costs of health care, criminality, and the indirect costs of lost productivity due to disability or premature death attributable to motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) in Canada. A policy effectiveness approach was used and the impact of three effective alcohol policy interventions aimed to reduce alcohol-impaired driving was modeled. The results demonstrated that…

  • The relation between different dimensions of alcohol consumption and burden of disease

Open Access•Jurgen Rehm, Dolly Baliunas et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction•2010

Aims As part of a larger study to estimate the global burden of disease and injury attributable to alcohol: to evaluate the evidence for a causal impact of average volume of alcohol consumption and pattern of drinking on diseases and injuries; to quantify relationships identified as causal based on published meta‐analyses; to separate the impact on mortality versus morbidity where possible; and to assess the impact of the quality of alcohol on bu…

  • Factors Associated with Treatment Compliance and its Effects on Retention among Participants in a Court-Mandated Treatment Program

Open Access•Jayadeep Patra, Louis Gliksman et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2010•Referencias: 58

Drug treatment court (DTC) programs have been implemented and promoted in American as well as Canadian judicial systems as an effective tool for reducing criminal recidivism rates. An evaluation of the program in Toronto revealed that the drug court participants' substance abuse and criminal behaviors are reduced while they are under the drug courts' jurisdiction, and to some extent recidivism is reduced after participants leave the program. Howe…

  • Alcohol as a Risk Factor for Type 2 Diabetes

    Open Access•Dolly Baliunas, Dolly O Baliunas et al.•ARTICLE•Diabetes Care•2009

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the dose-response relationship between alcohol consumption and type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A systematic computer-assisted and hand search was conducted to identify relevant articles with longitudinal design and quantitative measurement of alcohol consumption. Adjustment was made for the sick-quitter effect. We used fractional polynomials in a meta-regression to determine the dose-response relationships by s…

  • Avoidable Portion of Tobacco-Attributable Acute Care Hospital Days and Its Cost Due to Implementation of Different Intervention Strategies in Canada

Open Access•Svetlana Popova, Jayadeep Patra et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

The impact of four effective population-based interventions, focusing on individual behavioural change and aimed at reducing tobacco-attributable morbidity, was assessed by modeling with respect to effects on reducing prevalence rates of cigarette smoking, population-attributable fractions, reductions of disease-specific morbidity and its cost for Canada. Results revealed that an implementation of a combination of four tobacco policy intervention…

  • Deaths Associated with High-Volume Drinking of Alcohol among Adults in Canada in 2002

    Open Access•Jayadeep Patra, Benjamin J Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2009•Referencias: 29

This study estimates risks of mortality associated with high-volume drinking for Canada in 2002 by age and sex. Distribution of exposure was taken from a major Canadian survey and corrected for per capita consumption from production and sales. High-volume drinking was defined as a daily consumption of ⩾40 grams of pure alcohol (at least 3 Canadian drinks) for men and ⩾20 grams of pure alcohol (at least 1.5 Canadian drinks) for women. Risk relatio…

  • How Many People in Canada Use Prescription Opioids Nonmedically in General and Street Drug Using Populations

  • Smoking-attributable morbidity

Open Access•Dolly Baliunas, Jayadeep Patra et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Since the last major project produced estimates of this type, the rate of hospital days per 100,000 population has decreased by 33.8 percent. Several possible factors may have contributed to the decline in the rate of smoking-attributable hospital days: a drop in smoking prevalence, a decline in overall hospital days, and a shift in distribution of disease categories. Smoking remains a significant health, social, and economic burden in Canada

In 2002 in total, 62,110 years of life were lost prematurely, 42,306 years among men and 19,805 years a…
