Limitations of recreational camera traps for wildlife management and conservation research
The availability of affordable 'recreational' camera traps has dramatically increased over the last decade. We present survey results which show that many conservation practitioners use cheaper 'recreational' units for research rather than more expensive 'professional' equipment. We present our perspective of using two popular models of 'recreational' camera trap for ecological field-based studies. The models used (for >2 years) presented us with…

The role of ‘social exclusion’ and other metaphors in contemporary British social policy
Can future systemic financial risks be quantified
Different axioms underlie efficient market theory and Keynes's liquidity preference theory. Efficient market theory assumes the ergodic axiom. Consequently, today's decision makers can calculate with actuarial precision the future value of all possible outcomes resulting from today's decisions. Since in an efficient market world decision makers "know" their intertemporal budget constraints, decision makers never default on a loan, i.e., systemic …

Social exclusion as conceptual and grammatical metaphor
This article analyses `social exclusion' as conceptual and grammatical metaphor, discussing the concept's ideological impact on British policy-making. It complements work in political theory by employing a cognitive critical view of discourse and metaphor. The study draws on five different genres and analyses them quantitatively and qualitatively, looking at lemmas and their grammatical functions, clusters and collocations, and metaphoric express…
J.K. Galbraith and the Nature of Modern Money
This paper considers John Kenneth Galbraith's views on the nature of money and a monetary economy. Although recognised as a lifelong and prominent Keynesian, to many, Galbraith's principal theoretical contributions appear less concerned with the detail of financial sectors or the nature of money per se than other leading Post Keynesians. However, careful study suggests that Galbraith, like many Post Keynesians, recognised the salience of the fina…
A Post-Keynesian View of Contemporary Global Economic Relations
Is a Plumber or a New Financial Architect Needed to End Global International Liquidity Problems
Liquidity vs. Efficiency in Liberalized International Financial Markets
Until 1973 the postwar international payments system was, in large measure, shaped by Keynes’s thesis that flexible exchange rates and free international capital mobility are incompatible with global full employment and rapid economic growth in an era of multilateral free trade (Felix, 1977-8). This resulted in a stable international monetary system that permitted the global economy to experience unparalleled economic growth and prosperity despit…

Efficiency and Fragile Speculative Financial Markets
This article explores the relationship between volatility in financial markets, the Tobin tax solution, and an alternative solution requiring a creditable market maker. The discussion includes whether financial markets are inherently unstable and the relevance of bandwagon movements in financial markets
Are Grains of Sand in the Wheels of International Finance Sufficient to Do the Job When Boulders Are Often Required
This paper criticises the effectiveness of a Tobin tax in acting as a deterrent to short‐run round trip speculation on exchange rate movements. It is demonstrated that given the usual magnitude of a proposed Tobin tax, the deterrent to short‐term speculation will be negligible and in all likelihood smaller than the deterrent to real trade flows and arbitrage activities. Finally, an alternative proposal for preventing currency speculations while c…

Austrians and Post Keynesians on economic reality
Most economists—old and new classical, old and new Keynesian, and Austrian (as embodied in O'Driscoll and Rizzo's The Economics of Time and Ignorance) postulate an immutable reality unchangeable by any human action (the ergodic hypothesis). They differ only over the amount of information decisionmakers have, in the short run, about this unchanging reality. Keynes and the Post Keynesians provide an axiomatic alternative model that presumes a trans…
Is Probability Theory Relevant for Uncertainty? A Post Keynesian Perspective
Mainstream perspectives involving uncertainty presume that expectations are based on either a statistical analysis of past data, with market signals providing information about objective probabilities, or on subjective perceptions of these probabilities founded on the axioms of expected utility theory. Post Keynesians, following Keynes, have developed a different perspective, where probability distributions are not the basis for comprehending rea…

Inequality and the Double Bluff
This paper demonstrates the role of the distribu tion of income in promoting or retarding economic growth, in either free market or planned economies. Keynes's view of the importance of the double bluff of income inequality for nineteenth century capitalism is explained in a Harrod growth model. The difference between Harrod's model and the neo- Keynesian emphasis on distribution is explained. Finally, it is shown that, to encourage growth, a rat…

Modigliani on the Interaction of Monetary and Real Phenomena
In an important recent article,' Modigliani has renewed his analysis of the relationship between the real and monetary parts of the Keynesian system. One of Modigliani's major points in his latest article is that his famous 1944 model 2 embodied an error, for, in his opinion, it incorrectly specified the forms of the real aggregate consumption and investment demand functions.3 While we find much to agree with in this new model, we do not agree wi…

Money and Capacity Growth
IN ilnS review article on monetary theory, Harry G. Johnson noted that almost nothing has yet been done to break monetary theory loose from the mould of short-run equilibrium analysis, conducted in abstraction from the process of growth and accumulation, and to integrate it with the rapidly developing theoretical literature on economic growth (important exceptions noted here are Tobin and Enthoven). I An integration of monetary and growth theory …
