Women’s Experiences of Screening and Assessment of Mental Health Problems in the Perinatal Period
Mental health problems occur frequently in the perinatal period and timely identification is key for appropriate support to be offered. Women are routinely asked about their mental health and may undergo formal screening as part of healthcare services in the perinatal period. The aim of this review was to explore women’s views and experiences of being screened for mental health problems and to identify which aspects of this screening process they…
The Baby Triple P online positive parenting programme for mothers accessing community perinatal mental health care (the Opal study)
Prospective ISRCTN registration (11/03/2025): ISRCTN87365121; https://doi.org/10.1186/ISRCTN87365121
Digital screening for postnatal depression
Background Around 17 % of mothers experience postnatal depression (PND) in the year after childbirth, with suicide the leading cause of direct maternal death between 6 weeks and 12 months postpartum. As approximately half of PND cases go undetected, digital screening tools have been developed to improve identification. However, implementing innovations into routine care is challenging, with contextual factors and staff views influencing uptake. T…
Perinatal compassion focused therapy for mothers with mental health difficulties
To the authors' knowledge, this study will be the first multisite feasibility and acceptability study of perinatal compassion focused therapy offered to mothers and birthing parents in specialist perinatal mental health services in England's National Health Service (NHS). This study will identify any necessary refinements for future studies and considerations for good practice in this specific population and clinical setting, as well as the inter…
Interventions that prevent or reduce perinatal loneliness and its proximal determinants
The protocol for the trial was registered on Figshare
Fathers’ experiences of perinatal death following miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death
Following a perinatal death, parents can experience mental health difficulties and social stigma around the loss that can lead to increased feelings of isolation. This meta-synthesis aimed to explore partners' experiences of perinatal death following miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death. A search of six electronic databases resulted in the inclusion of 18 studies involving over 300 fathers. Using meta-ethnography five themes: were developed…
Women with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder experiences of suicidal thoughts and behaviours
Women living with PMDD are at high risk of self-harm, suicidal thoughts and attempts to end their lives each month, narratives highlighted the damaging impacts PMDD had on relationships. Risk was increased by delays in appropriate medical support and women reported internalising their experiences as their problem
Change in self-construal
All participants exhibited changes to construing during their MBU admission, with most participants displaying positive changes to self-esteem and self-perception and a more adaptive process of construing. Potential implications are offered for service users, families, clinicians, and stakeholders. Recommendations for future research are also provided
Finding my voice again” - women’s experiences of psychological therapy in perinatal secondary care settings
Sensitivity, engagement and responsivity experienced in the therapist-woman relationship was reported to be mirrored in the mother-infant relationship. Developing a coherent sense of self and self-regulation skills both appeared to heighten women's self-compassion and empathy for their infants, which also seemed to improve their ability to tolerate uncertainty and mixed emotions within themselves and their infants. The mechanisms of change in the…
A Brief Cognitive Behavioural Intervention for Parents of Anxious Children
Compassion focused therapy for women in the perinatal period
Although these results are encouraging for mothers presenting with sub-clinical mental health symptoms, further research is clearly warranted to determine whether CFT/P-CFT may benefit mothers, including those presenting with more significant perinatal mental health difficulties
Psychological intervention priorities according to perinatal women who experienced suicidal thoughts and perinatal mental health professionals
This is the first study using Q-methodology to explore the psychological intervention priorities of mothers and professionals. Findings indicate clear priorities in terms of planning and coping during a crisis, endorsed by all participants, and provide an initial step in the development of a new perinatal suicide prevention intervention
A Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial of a Parenting Intervention Offered to Women With Severe Mental Health Problems and Delivered in a Mother and Baby Unit Setting
This is the first trial of a parenting intervention in a MBU setting. BTP is feasible and acceptable to mothers with SMI, with a promising signal for treatment efficacy. Although minor modifications may be required for the collection of observer-rated measures post-MBU discharge, the findings indicate that a larger, definitive trial could be conducted, especially if the setting is extended to include perinatal mental health community settings
Exploring Staff Implementation of a Self-directed Parenting Intervention for Parents with Mental Health Difficulties
Parents with mental health difficulties face significant barriers in accessing evidence-based parenting interventions. Self-directed approaches may be a destigmatising, accessible alternative. Evidence has suggested that Triple P Positive Parenting Programme's self-directed format is as effective as more time- and cost-intensive delivery methods. The aim of the current study was to establish whether staff were able to use this intervention with p…
Self-Report Measures of Parental Self-Efficacy
“I just feel like I am broken. I am the worst pregnant woman ever”
Advances in perinatal mental health research have provided valuable insights around risk factors for the overall development of maternal distress. However, there is still a limited understanding of the experience of women struggling emotionally during pregnancy. We explored how women view, experience, and interpret psychological distress antenatally. Eighteen Australian women participated in in-depth interviews that were analyzed thematically wit…
The effects of maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress during pregnancy on preterm birth
The relationship of maternal mentalization and executive functioning to maternal recognition of infant cues and bonding
The study examined associations between maternal mentalization ability, executive functioning, recognition of infant cues, and bonding in a non‐clinical sample of mothers. It employed a correlational design. Sixty‐four mothers of young infants completed assessments of mentalization ability, executive functioning, and bonding. Photographs of infant facial expressions were utilized to assess ability to recognize infant cues of emotion, but this was…
