This article is a discipline-defining agenda. It addresses the oversight of Geographies of race in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and explores geography’s potential contributions to the unfolding debates around race, decolonisation, and whiteness. Geographies of race remain unmarked and therefore unchallenged within the field of geography in CEE. This essay examines the Polish and the Czech engagements with colonization. Whilst the present-day Poland and the Czech Republic are often perceived as nations “without colonies”, the Central European region throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries developed colonial imaginations as part of the “varieties of European colonialism” channeled towards the local needs. It is often erroneously assumed that Russians and Ukrainians are the “same people.” This conviction of sameness partly drove the aggressive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with a determination to forcefully drag a sovereign nation onto an assumed similar destination with Russia and Belarus.
