Evolution and history of grapevine (Vitis vinifera) under domestication
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In spite of the abundance of archaeological, bio-archaeological, historical and genetic data, the origins, historical biogeography, identity of ancient grapevine cultivars and mechanisms of domestication are still largely unknown. Here, analysis of variation in seed morphology aims to provide accurate criteria for the discrimination between wild grapes and modern cultivars and to understand changes in functional traits in rel…
New AMS 14 C Dates from The Early Upper Paleolithic Sequence of Raqefet Cave, Mount Carmel, Israel
Raqefet Cave (35 degrees 04'21"N, 32 degrees 39'17"W) is situated in the southeastern side of Mount Carmel in Israel (Figure 1) on the left bank of wadi Raqefet (230 m asl), ~50 m above the wadi bed. It is 50 m long with an area of ~500 m2 (Figure 2). Eric Higgs of Cambridge University and Tamar Noy of the Israel Museum conducted excavations at the site between 1970 and 1972 (Higgs et al. 1975). New excavations at the cave began in 2004 (Lengyel …
Historical biogeography of olive domestication ( Olea europaea L.) as revealed by geometrical morphometry applied to biological and archaeological material
Aim This study intends to improve our understanding of historical biogeography of olive domestication in the Mediterranean Basin, particularly in the north‐western area. Location Investigations were performed simultaneously on olive stones from extant wild populations, extant cultivated varieties from various Mediterranean countries, and archaeological assemblages of Spanish, French and Italian settlements. Methods A combination of morphometrics …

What do the charcoal fragments found in cremations represent ? Are these the mere remains of opportunistically gathered fuel, or were they deliberately chosen because of their species and/or their calibre and/or their combustible properties ? In northern France, oak or ash were often selected in proto-historical times. In the south, in ancient times and in a rural context or outside towns or cities, small-caliber wood from shrubs was often used t…
