  • Diverse growth trends and climate responses across Eurasia’s boreal forest

Open Access•Lena Hellmann, Leonid Agafonov et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The area covered by boreal forests accounts for 16% of the global and 22% of the Northern Hemisphere landmass. Changes in the productivity and functioning of this circumpolar biome not only have strong effects on species composition and diversity at regional to larger scales, but also on the Earth's carbon cycle. Although temporal inconsistency in the response of tree growth to temperature has been reported from some locations at the higher north…

  • Low-Frequency Signals in Long Tree-Ring Chronologies for Reconstructing Past Temperature Variability

Open Access•Jan Esper, Edward R Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2002

Preserving multicentennial climate variability in long tree-ring records is critically important for reconstructing the full range of temperature variability over the past 1000 years. This allows the putative “Medieval Warm Period” (MWP) to be described and to be compared with 20th-century warming in modeling and attribution studies. We demonstrate that carefully selected tree-ring chronologies from 14 sites in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) extrat…

  • Summer temperatures in eastern Taimyr inferred from a 2427-year late-Holocene tree-ring chronology and earlier floating series

    Open Access•Mukhtar M Naurzbaev, E A Vaganov et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 2

A brief review is presented of the progress, to date, in constructing a long, continuous ring-width chronology from living and subfossil Siberian larch (Larix gmelinii) in the eastern part of the Taimyr peninsula. A near 2500-year chronology running up to the present has been assembled and several shorter, earlier series have been produced that are dated approximately on the basis of radiocarbon dates. A description is given of the production of …

  • Years of climatic history for Western Central Asia inferred from tree-rings

    Open Access•Jan Esper, Fritz Hans Schweingruber et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 3

More than 200 000 ring-width measurements from 384 trees were obtained for 20 individual sites ranging from the lower to upper local timber-lines in the Northwest Karakorum of Pakistan and the Southern Tien Shan of Kirghizia. Samples were obtained predominantly from juniper species (Juniperus) and were analysed to reconstruct regional climatic variation patterns in Western Central Asia since ad 618. Site distri bution represents diverse ecologica…

  • Tree-ring width and density data around the Northern Hemisphere

    Open Access•Keith R Briffa, Timothy J Osborn et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 6

Patterns of summer temperature over the Northern Hemisphere, obtained from a calibration of a treering network, are presented for every year from 1600 to 1877. The network of tree-ring density chronologies is shown to exhibit spatially coherent modes of variability. These modes closely match summer half-year tempera ture variations, in terms of similar spatial patterns and similar temporal evolution during the instrumental period. They can, there…

  • Tree-ring width and density data around the Northern Hemisphere

    Open Access•Keith R Briffa, Timothy J Osborn et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 10

A detailed description is presented of the statistical patterns of climate forcing of tree growth (annual maximum latewood density and ring-width time series), across a network of 387 specially selected conifer sites that circle the extra-tropical Northern Hemisphere. The in‘ uence of summer temperature dominates growth. A mean April–September response is optimum for describing the major forcing signal over the whole densito-metric network, thoug…

  • Tree-ring based reconstruction of summer temperatures at the Columbia Icefield, Alberta, Canada, AD 1073-1983

    Open Access•Brian H Luckman, Keith R Briffa et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 4

April-August temperatures are reconstructed from maximum latewood density and ring-width data for a tree-line site in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta close to Athabasca Glacier. The chronology primarily utilizes Picea engelmannii with some Abies lasiocarpa snags. This reconstruction (AD 1073-1983) is the longest densitometrically based summer temperature record from boreal North America. Mean temperatures from 1101- 1900 were 0.71°C below the 196…

Open Access•Keith R Briffa, Thomas Bartholin et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•1990

  • Summer Temperature Patterns over Europe

    Open Access•Keith R Briffa, P D Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1988

Temperature variations over Europe are reconstructed for a 6-month “summer” season from April to September for the period 1750–1850 using a network of maximum latewood density chronologies of coniferous trees. Around 44% of the variance of the whole temperature grid was explained in calibration. Independent verification indicates that over the reconstruction period the explained variance averaged over the whole grid should lie in the range 30 to …
