  • Translating the Poetry of Salvador Espriu

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2018

To date, the poetry of Salvador Espriu has appeared in three English-language translated anthologies: by Kenneth Lyons, Magda Bogin and Louis Rodrigues. This study considers the differing approaches and priorities of these translated anthologies volumes, and focuses especially on the problems associated with anthologizing a poet whose work relies heavily on the concept of integrated wholes, in some cases in what could be described as macro-poems.…

  • Antonio Machado’s ‘Late Style’

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2016

This essay departs from the notion of the journey as an image of the poet's career in the poetry of Antonio Machado. This journey implies a process that is, for the most part, reactive rather than evolutionary, notably as in Campos de Castilla. The principal focus, however, is with a less readily explicable feature relating to the poetry that Machado wrote in the period of the Second Republic, specifically in his Cancionero apócrifo. The acknowle…

  • Some Observations on the Sonnet in Golden-Age Plays and Quevedo's ‘Dramatic’ Sonnets

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2015

While the characteristic potential of the sonnet is seldom realized by Golden-Age playwrights, is there a poet who has unlocked the sonnet's dramatic possibilities? It is argued that the most fertile area for consideration is to be found in the poetry of Francisco de Quevedo. Whereas Góngora's sonnets seldom lose sight of their potential for the architectural, Quevedo's veer more obviously towards the verbal and the colloquial. If Góngora's amato…

  • Rosalía de Castro Misreading and Misread

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2013

This article explores firstly the ways in which poems from Rosalía de Castro's En las orillas del Sar emerge as misreadings both of her contemporaries and of writers of the Golden Age. In particular Castro's engagement with Bécquer, Fray Luis de León and San Juan de la Cruz serves to demonstrate distinctively negative and sceptical views of life and belief in God. In like manner an analysis of ‘Santa Escolástica’ reveals how over much of the poem…

  • The Buscón in Context

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2011

The Buscón has proved to be one of the most controversial Spanish texts in recent decades. A. A. Parker believed it to be a work of Quevedo's maturity and one that embodied a moral vision of life and society. By contrast, Fernando Lázaro Carreter considered it to be the product of a young writer that constituted a virtuoso linguistic performance rather than the promotion of an ethical viewpoint: an example of art for art's sake. This article prob…

  • The intellectual and the masses

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian & Latin…•2011•Referencias: 2

Most commentators on Lorca's Poeta en Nueva York point to the clash of cultures as a key element in the making of the collection: the shock and scandal of a Spanish writer ill at ease in the vast metropolis represented by New York at the end of the 1920s. This article, however, views Lorca's horror and alienation as similar to the disgust for the city and for crowds that is a preoccupation of many modernist authors, in particular those writing in…

  • The Painful Gift

    D Gareth Walters•ARTICLE•Hispanic Research Journal•2008

More than in earlier periods, twentieth-century poets have regarded the subject of poetry and the role of the poet as material appropriate for the poem itself rather than for merely theorizing about poetry. This essay explores how such a metapoetic preoccupation is manifested in the work of three poets who, in differing ways, illustrate Wallace Stevens' observation that 'the interest of the poem is not in its meaning but in [. . .] the achieving …
