Study protocol for a theory-informed randomized controlled trial of a lifestyle and sleep intervention to improve quality of life and physical activity in inactive adults
Sleep, physical activity, and diet are key determinants of health, each independently associated with chronic disease risk and mortality. These behaviors also interact: insufficient sleep can impair physical activity and dietary choices, while regular exercise and healthy diet promote better sleep. Although lifestyle interventions commonly target physical activity and diet, few simultaneously address sleep. Emerging evidence suggests that even sm…
Sociodemographic precursors of explicit and implicit attitudes towards physical activity
OBJECTIVE: In high-income countries, people with low socio-economic status (SES) engage in less leisure-time physical activity (PA) than those with higher SES. Beyond a materialistic account of this difference, the role of motivational precursors-among which attitudes are emblematic-remains poorly understood, particularly when it comes to dissociating the automatic vs. deliberative components of attitudes. This pre-registered study aimed to exami…
Three-Year Follow-Up of a Hybrid Adapted Physical Activity Program Including Telehealth in Comparison to In-Person Care for Chronic Conditions
Adapted physical activity (PA) programs benefit patients with non‐communicable diseases, but access barriers limit reach. Hybrid programs mixing in‐person and telehealth sessions may overcome these constraints. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of a 3‐month hybrid APA program compared with usual face‐to‐face care and to examine whether benefits persist up to 36 months. Twenty patients with chronic disea…
Women carry the weight of deprivation on physical inactivity
Deprived people are less physically active than privileged individuals. However, pathways underlying the association between deprivation and physical activity remain overlooked. We examined whether the association between deprivation and physical activity was mediated by body mass index (BMI). Consistent with an intersectional perspective (how the combination of belongingness to vulnerable social categories widens inequalities), we tested whether…

Being Active during the Lockdown
Physical activity carried out regularly during the COVID-19 lockdown positively predicted well-being through recovery experiences. The study results highlight the importance of maintaining or increasing physical activity during periods when recovery experiences and well-being may be threatened
Motivation in the Athens Classic Marathon
The aim of the present study was to examine the motivation of recreational runners and its variation by sex, age, and performance level. Finishers (female: n = 32, age 40.1 ± 9.0 years old, height 162 ± 7 cm, body mass 57.7 ± 7.5 kg, race record 4:34 ± 0:39 h:min; male: n = 134, 44.2 ± 8.6 years, 176 ± 6 cm, 77.0 ± 9.3 kg, 4:02 ± 0:44 h:min) in the Athens Classic Marathon 2017 completed the Motivations of Marathoners Scales (MOMS) 56-item questio…
An Ego Depletion Account of Aging Stereotypes’ Effects on Health-Related Variables
This study confirmed that endorsement of age stereotypes of PA predicted subjective vitality among active older adults. These results suggest that stereotypes may be related to health-related outcomes notably through ego depletion effects
Social Antecedents and Consequences of Gender-Sport Stereotypes During Adolescence
Eccles et al.’s Expectancy-Value Model posits that the stereotypes endorsed by parents may influence their children’s participation in leisure-time activities. This influence is presumed to occur through the mediating role of children’s perceived competence and value given to the activity, predicting in turn drop out. Previous research is scarce relative to (a) the parent–child transmission of gender stereotypes and (b) the relationships among st…
Feeling Younger, Being Stronger
This study is among the first to induce a younger subjective age. It supports the notion that redirecting older adults' attention to downward social comparison with same-aged peers is a promising strategy to maintain a sense of feeling younger. In addition, our results provide an initial positive answer to the question of whether feeling younger translates into better physical functioning
Physiological markers of challenge and threat mediate the effects of performance-based goals on performance
