This article found elevated levels of trauma symptoms related to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in students at a university in Northern California. In an analogue comparison, the impact on trauma symptoms of 2 interventions—journal writing and story listening—was examined. College students were randomly assigned to write about their emotional reactions to 9/11 or to listen to stories evoking themes relevant to the national tragedy. Participants in…

The psychotherapy progress formulation, composed of systematic observation and theoretical conceptualization, can serve as an assessment of psychotherapy processes and outcomes. Toward the re-enchantment of psychotherapy
Storytelling by a therapist to clients may serve to increase clients’ ability to bear pain, to increase self‐complexity, and expand clients’ senses of the allowable. A model delineating the therapeutic impact of therapist storytelling in psychotherapy is proposed. This case study illustrates the potential for the application of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM) diagnoses to exacerbate clients’ symptoms and inhibit the healing process in psychotherapy.
