Play in the psychotherapy for psychosis.
“Life Is Getting There.” A Case Report of Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (Merit) with an Individual Diagnosed with Mild Intellectual Disability and Chronic Acute Care Service Utilization
Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) face considerable hardship and many experience chronic self-harm, but this population is often neglected in the psychotherapy literature. Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT; Lysaker & Klion, 2017) is an integrative psychotherapy model that puts meaning-making at the center of the treatment approach by helping clients with impaired metacognition develop a unique sense of themselves, wh…
Navigating Client Deaths in the Community Mental Health Center
Mental health providers in community mental health centers (CMHCs) often contend with patient deaths but there is little established guidance in the literature in regard to clinical supervision following these losses in general, and making meaning of these experiences specifically. A Disorder by Any Other Name
Humanistic psychology has made us aware that any understanding of schizophrenia must see persons diagnosed with this condition as whole persons who are making sense of what wellness and recovery mean to them. This has raised questions about what the diagnosis of schizophrenia means and whether the diagnostic label of schizophrenia is helpful when we try to conceptualize the actions and aims of treatment. To examine this issue we propose it is ess…
Psychoanalytic phenomenology of schizophrenia
A review of psychoanalytic writings reveals a vibrant but overlooked history of descriptions of the phenomenology of schizophrenia. In this paper we suggest that neglect of these important psychoanalytic contributions to the understanding of alterations of self-experience in schizophrenia is at least partially due to an absence of sufficient operational definitions by which to study these constructs. We then detail an emergent line of research fr…
Literature as an exploration of the phenomenology of schizophrenia
When read as a fictional psychosis narrative, Jesus' Son, a collection of short stories by Denis Johnson, reveals important elements of the phenomenology of schizophrenia and recovery. It is possible that Jesus' Son, as a work of fiction, may be able to uniquely add depth and nuance to an understanding of the phenomenology of schizophrenia involving a state of psychological fragmentation, an ever-changing interpersonal field and a loss of persona…
