  • The relationships between adverse life events, depression, economic activities, and human capital investment in Nigeria

Ryoko Sato, Julian Jamison et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2022

This paper examines the links between adverse events, depression, and decision-making in Nigeria. It investigates how events such as conflicts, shocks, and deaths of family members can affect short-term mental health, as well as longer-term decisions on economic activities and human capital investments. First, the findings show that exposure to conflict has the largest and strongest relationship with depression, associated with a 21-26 percentage…

  • The Local Economic Effects of Natural Resources Evidence from Ghana

Josephine Ofori Adofo, Nori Tarui et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2022

This paper estimates the welfare impacts of natural resources by analyzing Ghana’s offshore oil discovery and subsequent production. It finds substantial increases in real income, but no effect on consumption and poverty. The income effects are stronger for skilled workers. Estimates of the effects of oil discovery on employment show that employment in general increased by 4 percentage points. The positive employment effects are largely concentra…

  • Pharmacy responses during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Shinichi Watanabe, Yu Inami et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

From public health perspectives, pharmacies should adopt measures to prevent infections spread and, if necessary, utilise online tools and other new strategies to achieve this goal. It is also essential to educate the public about infection control, stockpile supplies, and work with hospitals to prevent COVID-19 spreads

  • Risk and Time Preferences

Tomomi Tanaka, Colin F Camerer et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2010

We conducted experiments in Vietnamese villages to determine the predictors of risk and time preferences. In villages with higher mean income, people are less loss-averse and more patient. Household income is correlated with patience but not with risk. We expand measurements of risk and time preferences beyond expected utility and exponential discounting, replacing those models with prospect theory and a three-parameter hyperbolic discounting mod…

  • The Impact of Simple Institutions in Experimental Economies with Poverty Traps

Open Access•C Monica Capra, Tomomi Tanaka et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 37

We introduce an experimental approach to study the effect of institutions on economic growth. In \neach period, agents produce and trade output in a market, and allocate it to consumption and \ninvestment. Productivity is higher if total capital stock is above a threshold. The threshold externality \ngenerates two steady states – a suboptimal poverty trap and an optimal steady state. In a baseline \ntreatment, the economies converge to the povert…
