  • The Culture is Prevention Project

Open Access•Paul Masotti, John Dennem et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Native American/Indigenous culture is a predictor of improved outcomes for mental health/well-being and physical healthy days. Native culture is an important social determinant of health. • Effects of early vitamin D deficiency rickets on bone and dental health, growth and immunity

Open Access•Melissa Zerofsky, Mark I Ryder et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2015

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with adverse health outcomes, including impaired bone growth, gingival inflammation and increased risk for autoimmune disease, but the relationship between vitamin D deficiency rickets in childhood and long-term health has not been studied. In this study, we assessed the effect of early vitamin D deficiency on growth, bone density, dental health and immune function in later childhood to determine if children pre…

  • Reclaiming our Roots

Janet King, Janet C King•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2011

Best practices for Native Americans are rooted in culture. However, reclaiming best practices is a challenge given the genocidal policies that outlawed Native culture. Despite this challenge Native people have proven resilient in restoring culture. The Native American Health Center in Oakland, California, has made cultural interventions an option for an urban, intertribal and sometimes multiracial Native American population to create and maintain…

  • A Holistic System of Care for Native Americans in an Urban Environment

Ethan Nebelkopf, Janet King et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2003

The Native American Health Center has implemented a holistic system of care in the San Francisco Bay Area as a result of a multiyear strategic planning process that included a needs assessment based on the community-readiness model. The strategic plan links substance abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS, and social services in a holistic approach congruent with Native American values and traditions.
