  • Adverse childhood experiences and weight stigma

Open Access•Erica M Schulte, Caroline Bach et al.•ARTICLE•Stigma and Health•2021

Prior research has demonstrated that individuals with a higher body weight (i.e., obesity) have a relatively high incidence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (e.g., abuse, neglect). Individuals with obesity are also susceptible to experiencing and internalizing weight stigma. Negative physical and mental health consequences have been associated with both ACEs and weight stigma, yet the interplay between these factors has not been explored. …

  • Associations between causal attributions for obesity and long-term weight loss

    Rebecca L Pearl, Thomas A Wadden et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2019

Obesity is a complex disease caused by a wide array of behavioral, biological, and environmental factors. However, obesity is often attributed to oversimplified and stigmatizing causal factors such as laziness, lack of willpower, and failure to take personal responsibility for one's health. Understanding of the causal factors that contribute to obesity among people with obesity may affect their weight management efforts. The current study explore…

  • Parental Feeding Attitudes and Styles and Child Body Mass Index

Myles S Faith, Robert I Berkowitz et al.•ARTICLE•PEDIATRICS•2004

Background. Parental feeding styles were linked to child weight in cross-sectional studies, which were unable to test the direction of effect. Prospective studies can best establish causal relationships among such variables. Objective. We tested the 2-year stability of parental feeding attitudes and styles and investigated whether these variables predict child body mass index (BMI) z scores 2 years later. We evaluated whether these associations w…

  • Binge-eating disorder and the night-eating syndrome

    Open Access•A J Stunkard, Robert I Berkowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•1995

Binge eating disorder is far less frequent than has been believed on the basis of questionnaire studies and it is highly responsive to placebos. Frequency of the night-eating syndrome is comparable to that of binge eating disorder. Future studies should assess binge eating disorder by interview rather than by self-administered questionnaire
