  • Quality of life among older informal caregivers in Sweden

Open Access•Mariam Kirvalidze, Maider Mateo‐Abad et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2026

Our findings emphasize that a substantial proportion of older caregivers have suboptimal QoL, and that those with poor mental QoL also experience higher levels of loneliness and social isolation. Targeted policies to reduce caregiver burden and enhance their QoL are essential

  • Quality of life, care needs and priorities in atrial fibrillation

Open Access•Caterina Trevisan, Adele Ravelli et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2026

Both number and combinations of AF comorbidities shape patients' and caregivers' experiences. Considering comorbidity profiles can help define targeted care plans and caregiver support initiatives

  • Intersectional analysis of social determinants of health and their association with mortality in patients with multimorbidity

    Open Access•Aída Moreno-Juste, Clara Laguna-Berna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

The progressive increase in the number of patients with multimorbidity (i.e. with two or more chronic diseases) represents a major global challenge for health systems and daily clinical practice, as well as for epidemiological research [1,2]. Recent evidence has highlighted the limitations of current health care systems for addressing the complex needs of patients with [...]

  • Is the diagnosis and treatment of depression gender-biased? Evidence from a population-based aging cohort in Sweden

Open Access•Amaia Bacigalupe, Unai Martín et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2024

A gender-bias was identified in the diagnosis and treatment of depression in older adults within the Swedish healthcare setting, which could imply that health services may be contributing to the medicalization of women's mental health. Gender-sensitive clinical and public health interventions are essential to reduce gender disparities in mental healthcare, also in old age

  • Multimorbidity, social determinants and intersectionality in chronic patients. Results from the EpiChron Cohort

    Open Access•Aída Moreno-Juste, Antonio Gimeno‐Miguel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2023

Background: Multimorbidity is influenced in an interconnected way, both in extent and nature, by the social determinants of health. We aimed at implementing an intersectional approach to analyse the association of multimorbidity with five important axes of social inequality (i.e. gender, age, ethnicity, residence area and socioeconomic class). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study of all individuals who presented with at lea…

  • Variability in perceived burden and health trajectories among older caregivers

Open Access•Mariam Kirvalidze, Giorgi Beridze et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2023•Referencias: 28

BACKGROUND: The negative effects of informal caregiving are determined by the characteristics of the caregiver-care receiver dyad and the context of care. In this study, we aimed to identify which subgroups of older informal caregivers (1) experience the greatest subjective burden and (2) incur a faster decline in objective health status. METHODS: From a total of 3363 older participants in the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholm…

  • Influence of Active and Healthy Ageing on Quality of Life Changes

    Open Access•Alba Ayala, Carmen Rodríguez‐Blázquez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study aimed to analyze the determinants of quality of life (QoL) in older people in three European countries (Portugal, Spain and Sweden). A sample of 7589 participants in waves 4 (2011) and 6 (2015) of the Survey on Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) project, aged 50 and over and living in Portugal, Spain and Sweden, was included. The CASP-12 scale was used to measure QoL. A principal component analysis was performed to group p…

  • Overuse or underuse? Use of healthcare services among irregular migrants in a north-eastern Spanish region

    Open Access•Luís Andrés Gimeno-Feliú, Marta Pastor-Sanz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2021

Under conditions of equal access, healthcare utilization is much lower among irregular migrants than Spanish nationals (and lower than that of documented migrants), regardless of country of origin or length of stay in Spain

  • High excess mortality in areas with young and socially vulnerable populations during the Covid-19 outbreak in Stockholm Region, Sweden

Open Access•Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga, Davide Liborio Vetrano et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to describe the distribution of excess mortality (EM) during the first weeks of the COVID-19 outbreak in the Stockholm Region, Sweden, according to age, sex and sociodemographic context. METHODS: Weekly all-cause mortality data were obtained from Statistics Sweden for the period 1 January 2015 to 17 May 2020. EM during the first 20 weeks of 2020 was estimated by comparing observed mortality rates with expected mortality rat…

  • Are Loneliness and Social Isolation Associated with Quality of Life in Older Adults? Insights from Northern and Southern Europe

Open Access•Giorgi Beridze, Alba Ayala et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Loneliness and social isolation are prospectively associated with decreased QoL among older adults, yet the associations are contextually bound. Future interventions should target both exposures, among others, in order to increase QoL in this group

  • Anxiety, Depression and Quality of Life in Older Adults

Open Access•Oscar Ribeiro, Laetitia Teixeira et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This study focuses on the influence of anxiety and depression on individual trajectories of quality of life in old age through a longitudinal approach. A representative sample of adults aged 50+ living in Portugal and participating in wave 4 (W4) and wave 6 (W6) of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) project was considered. Participants, 1765 at baseline (W4) and 1201 at follow up (W6), were asked about their quality of …

  • Multimorbidity and chronic diseases among undocumented migrants

    Open Access•Luís Andrés Gimeno-Feliú, Marta Pastor-Sanz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2020

Analysis of data from a health system that offers universal coverage to all immigrants, irrespective of legal status, reveals that the prevalence of chronic disease and multimorbidity is lower in UMs as compared with both DMs and Spanish nationals. These findings refute previous claims that the morbidity burden in UM populations is higher than that of the native population of the host country

  • The definition of immigrant status matters

    Open Access•Luís Andrés Gimeno-Feliú, Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Mortality estimates in immigrant populations were lower than those of the native Spanish population, regardless of the criteria applied. However, the proportion of deaths was lower when immigrant status was defined using nationality instead of country of birth. Age- and sex-standardized death proportions tended to increase with increased length of stay in the host country

  • Patterns of pharmaceutical use for immigrants to Spain and Norway

    Open Access•Luís Andrés Gimeno-Feliú, Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2016

Although equity in health care is theoretically a cornerstone in Western societies, several studies show that services do not always provide equitable care for immigrants. Differences in pharmaceutical consumption between immigrants and natives are explained by variances in predisposing factors, enabling factors and needs across populations, and can be used as a proxy of disparities in health care use. By comparing the relative differences in pha…

  • Global healthcare use by immigrants in Spain according to morbidity burden, area of origin, and length of stay

    Open Access•Luís Andrés Gimeno-Feliú, Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

In a universal coverage health system offering broad legal access to immigrants, the global use of healthcare services was lower for immigrants than for nationals. These differences may be explained in part by the healthy migration effect, but also reveal possible inequalities in healthcare provision that warrant further investigation

  • Multimorbidity patterns

    Open Access•Alexandra Prados-Torres, Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Clinical Epidemiology•2014

  • Association between physical activity, multimorbidity, self-rated health and functional limitation in the Spanish population

    Open Access•Cristina Cimarras-Otal, Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

There is an inverse association between multimorbidity and PA in the youngest and oldest age groups. In addition, both low self-rated health status and the presence of functional limitations were related to lower PA in most of the examined population groups. These features should be considered in the design and implementation of community-based approaches to promoting PA, if further corroborated in longitudinal studies

  • Primary care utilisation patterns among an urban immigrant population in the Spanish National Health System

    Open Access•Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga, Luís Andrés Gimeno-Feliú et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Although immigrants make lower use of PC services than the native population after adjusting the consultation rate for age and sex, these differences decrease significantly when considering their morbidity burden. These results reinforce the 'healthy migration effect' and discount the existence of differences in PC utilisation patterns between the immigrant and native populations in Spain

  • Does the pharmacy expenditure of patients always correspond with their morbidity burden? Exploring new approaches in the interpretation of pharmacy expenditure

    Open Access•Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga, Beatriz Poblador‐Plou et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

With appropriate validation, the methodologies of the present study could be incorporated in the routine monitoring of the prescribing profile of general practitioners. This could not only enable evaluation of their performance, but also target groups of outlier patients and foster analyses of the causes of unusually high pharmacy expenditures among them. This interpretation of pharmacy expenditure gives new clues for the efficiency in utilisatio…
