Associations between emotional support and cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-age
Objective To test the hypothesis of low emotional support being associated with lifestyle and biomedical cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, estimated risk of CVD morbidity and mortality, and subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-aged healthy adults. Methods and measures Cross-sectional data were obtained from participants aged 40–60 years who had one or more conventional CVD risk factor. They underwent assessment based on questionnaires, c…
Quality of life of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate–Palestine
The study showed that diabetes generally had a negative impact on QoL and identified the demand for diabetes management programs tailored to patient needs and different patient groups, as well as health policies that put patients in the center of diabetes care
Waist Circumference and All-Cause Mortality among Older Adults in Rural Indonesia
Waist circumference, a measure of abdominal obesity, is associated with all-cause mortality in general adult population. However, the link between abdominal obesity with all-cause mortality in the studies of older adults is unclear. This study aims to determine the association between waist circumference and all-cause mortality in older adults in Indonesia. The association between waist circumference and all-cause mortality was examined in 10,997…
A cost-effectiveness analysis of a community based CVD program in Sweden based on a retrospective register cohort
Our analysis shows that Västerbotten Intervention Programme is extremely cost-effective in relation to the Swedish threshold value (SEK 500000 per QALY gained or Euro 53,000 per QALY gained). Other research has also shown a favorable effect of Västerbotten Intervention Programme on population health and the health gap. We therefore argue that all health care organizations, acting in settings reasonably similar to Sweden, have good incentive to im…
Impact of weight maintenance and loss on diabetes risk and burden
Weight maintenance in adulthood is strongly associated with reduced incident diabetes risk and there is considerable potential for diabetes prevention in promoting this as a whole population strategy
A reversal of decreasing trends in population cholesterol levels in Västerbotten County, Sweden
BACKGROUND: High cholesterol is identified as a major risk factor for chronic non-communicable diseases, especially cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Monitoring trends of cholesterol levels and comparing trends across population groups are important to assess population distribution and risks related to cholesterol change over time. Cholesterol surveillance data are lacking, even in high-income countries. OBJECTIVES: To describe the tr…
Changing patterns of tobacco use in a middle-aged population – the role of snus, gender, age, and education
BACKGROUND: In Sweden, the smoking prevalence has declined. In 2007, it was among the lowest in the industrialized world. A steady increase in the use of Swedish oral moist snuff, snus, has occurred in parallel. This development is neither solicited by authorities nor the medical establishment, but rather has occurred along with increased awareness of the dangers of smoking, and has been promoted by product development and marketing of snus. OBJE…
Who is using snus? - Time trends, socioeconomic and geographic characteristics of snus users in the ageing Swedish population
A disadvantaged social profile and also higher prevalence in rural areas is observed among male snus users who had never smoked or were previous smokers. Among male smokers there was no association between SES and use of snus. The prevalence of snus use among women is increasing, but is still considerably lower than that of men. The association between snus and SES characteristics is less pronounced among women, although snus is clearly linked to…
Self-rated health does not predict 10-year weight change among middle-aged adults in a longitudinal population study
There is a worldwide obesity epidemic, but lack of a simple method, applicable for research or clinical use, to identify individuals at high risk of weight gain. Therefore, the relationship of self-rated health and 10-year percent weight change was evaluated to determine if self-rated health would predict weight change. From 1990 to 2008, adults aged 30, 40, 50 and 60 years were invited to health surveys that included self-rated health and measur…
The obesity epidemic slows among the middle-aged population in Sweden while the socioeconomic gap widens
BACKGROUND: Obesity prevalence has continuously increased in Northern Sweden as elsewhere. A cohort effect has been shown and an increasing proportion of the middle-aged population is maintaining body weight. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the obesity epidemic continues but at different speeds that are dependent on socioeconomic status. DESIGN: Cross-sectional (103,940 adults) and longitudinal (26,872 adults) data from the Västerbotten In…
Who is maintaining weight in a middle-aged population in Sweden? A longitudinal analysis over 10 years
Educational efforts should be broadened to include those adults who are usually considered to be at low risk for weight gain--younger individuals, those of normal body weight, and those without health conditions (e.g. diabetes type 2) and cardiovascular risk factors--as these are the individuals who are least likely to maintain their body weight over a 10 year period. The importance of focusing obesity prevention efforts on such individuals has n…
