  • The Nursing Management of Chronic Disease in the General Practice Setting

Open Access•Marie M Cantwell, Marie Cantwell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

The objective of this scoping review is to examine the extent and type of evidence relating to the nurse’s role in the management of chronic disease in a general practice setting. This review forms part of a wider research project taking a case study approach to answer the following research question: what are the continuous professional development needs of nurses who support the structured chronic disease management (CDM) programme in general p…

  • A co-designed evaluation study to identify Breastfeeding Knowledge of General Practitioners’ and Practice Nurses’

Open Access•Denise McGuinness, Siobhan Ni Mhurchu et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2024

The World Health Organization and American Academy of Paediatrics recommend exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with complementary solid foods for up to 2 years and beyond. Despite the well-established importance of breastfeeding, Irish rates remain the lowest in Europe. Healthcare professionals’ breastfeeding knowledge and skills have a positive impact on increasing breastfeeding rates. There is limi…

  • Metabolic syndrome among 13 year old adolescents

Open Access•AA Fadzlina, Fatimah Harun et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Our results provide the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Malaysian adolescents. Adequate sleep between 7 and 9 hours per day reduces the risk of developing metabolic syndrome

  • An exploratory study on risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases among adolescents in Malaysia

Open Access•MyHeART Study Group, Majid Abdul Hazreen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Our results demonstrated that adolescents from the rural area are at higher risk of NCDs compared to their urban counterpart. Tailor made public health interventions are highly recommended for adolescents as this may minimise the dreadful NCD burden in adulthood and health disparity between the rural and urban in the near future

  • Fitness level and body composition indices

Open Access•Redzal Abu Hanifah, Hazreen Abdul Majid et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Only 9.6% of the students were fit. There was also an inverse association between body composition and fitness score among apparently healthy adolescents, with waist circumference indicated as the strongest predictor. The low fitness level among the Malaysian adolescent should necessitate the value of healthy lifestyle starting at a young age

  • O6-2.4 Early life exposures and the development of testicular cancer in Northern Ireland

Shoaib Alam, Marie M Cantwell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Objectives To investigate perinatal risk factors for testicular cancer in a Northern Ireland population cohort. Methods Perinatal data have been routinely recorded in Northern Ireland for all births in the period 1971–1986 (n=447, 663). Testicular cancer status was ascertained in this cohort by identifying 249 individuals diagnosed from 1971 to 2008 and date of birth in the period 1971–1986. Results Increased testicular cancer risk was associated…

  • P1-163 Increased incidence and detection rates of carcinoma in situ of the breast

    J Glover, J A Glover et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Background Increased incidence of carcinoma in situ (CIS) has generally been attributed to widespread application of mammography screening. However, direct evidence for the impact of screening is rare. Methods Screen detected and total CIS (ICD-10 D05) incidence data were obtained, between 1990 and 2007 where possible, from regional cancer registries in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (ROI). Age-standardised incidence rates for the UK and ROI,…

  • Development and validation of a food-frequency questionnaire for the determination of detailed fatty acid intakes

    Open Access•Marie M Cantwell, Michael J Gibney et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2005

Objective To validate a fat intake questionnaire (FIQ) developed to assess habitual dietary intake while focusing on the assessment of detailed fatty acid intake including total trans unsaturated fatty acids (TUFA). Design An 88 food item/food group FIQ was developed using a meal pattern technique. Validation was achieved by comparison with dietary intake assessed by a modified diet history (DH) in a cross-over design. Eighty-four individuals sup…
