  • Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout Strategies in Utah from Local Health Departments’ Perspectives

Open Access•Khanh Ngoc Cong Duong, Sajesh K Veettil et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2025

Introduction: Local health departments (LHDs) play an essential role in providing COVID-19 vaccines to underserved populations in Utah. This study aimed to understand barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake for these populations and challenges faced by LHDs from LHDs' perspectives. In addition, we explored LHDs' experience with implementing COVID-19 mobile vaccine clinics (MVCs) in Utah. Materials and Methods: We conducted virtual focus group discuss…

  • What Is the Active Prevalence of Covid-19

Mu-Jeung Yang, Mu‐Jeung Yang et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We provide a method to track the active prevalence of COVID-19 in real time, correcting for time-varying sample selection in symptom-based testing data and incomplete tracking of recovered cases and fatalities. Our method only requires publicly available data on positive testing rates in combination with one parameter, which we estimate based on a representative randomized sample of nearly 10,000 individuals tested in Utah in May and June 2020. W…

  • Infectious disease surveillance needs for the United States

Open Access•Marc Lipsitch, Mary T Bassett et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to upgrade systems for infectious disease surveillance and forecasting and modeling of the spread of infection, both of which inform evidence-based public health guidance and policies. Here, we discuss requirements for an effective surveillance system to support decision making during a pandemic, drawing on the lessons of COVID-19 in the U.S., while looking to jurisdictions in the U.S. and beyond to …

  • Model-based estimates of age-structured Sars-CoV-2 epidemiology in households

    Open Access•Damon Toth, Damon J A Toth et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

We disentangled several factors contributing to age-specific infection risk, including non-household exposure, within-household exposure to specific age groups, and household size. Within-household contact rate differences played a significant role in driving household transmission epidemiology. These findings provide nuanced insights for understanding community outbreak patterns and mechanisms of differential infection risk

  • Disparities in Covid-19 related outcomes in the United States by race and ethnicity pre-vaccination era

Open Access•Khanh Ngoc Cong Duong, Lan Le et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background: Meta-analyses have investigated associations between race and ethnicity and COVID-19 outcomes. However, there is uncertainty about these associations' existence, magnitude, and level of evidence. We, therefore, aimed to synthesize, quantify, and grade the strength of evidence of race and ethnicity and COVID-19 outcomes in the US. Methods: In this umbrella review, we searched four databases (Pubmed, Embase, the Cochrane Database of Sys…

  • Combining Natural Language Processing of Electronic Medical Notes With Administrative Data to Determine Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Disclosure and Documentation of Military Sexual Trauma in Veter…

    Adi V Gundlapalli, Audrey L Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2019•Referencias: 16

BACKGROUND: Despite national screening efforts, military sexual trauma (MST) is underreported. Little is known of racial/ethnic differences in MST reporting in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare patterns of MST disclosure in VHA by race/ethnicity. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of MST disclosures in a national, random sample of Veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq and completed MST…

  • In Data We Trust? Comparison of Electronic Versus Manual Abstraction of Antimicrobial Prescribing Quality Metrics for Hospitalized Veterans With Pneumonia

    Barbara Jones, Barbara E Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2018•Referencias: 22

BACKGROUND: Electronic health records provide the opportunity to assess system-wide quality measures. Veterans Affairs Pharmacy Benefits Management Center for Medication Safety uses medication use evaluation (MUE) through manual review of the electronic health records. OBJECTIVE: To compare an electronic MUE approach versus human/manual review for extraction of antibiotic use (choice and duration) and severity metrics. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospect…

  • Increased Health Care Utilization and Costs Among Veterans With a Positive Screen for Military Sexual Trauma

    Emily Brignone, Adi V Gundlapalli et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•Referencias: 29

BACKGROUND: The effects of sexual trauma on long-term health care utilization and costs are not well understood due to infrequent documentation of sexual trauma history in health care systems. The Veteran's Health Administration provides a unique opportunity to address this constraint as sexual trauma is actively screened for as part of routine care. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort design to analyze Veteran's Health Administration mental …

  • Patient-aligned Care Team Engagement to Connect Veterans Experiencing Homelessness With Appropriate Health Care

    Adi V Gundlapalli, Andrew Redd et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•Referencias: 28

BACKGROUND: Veterans experiencing homelessness frequently use emergency and urgent care (ED). OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of a Patient-aligned Care Team (PACT) model tailored to the unique needs of Veterans experiencing homelessness (H-PACT) on frequency and type of ED visits in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical facilities. RESEARCH DESIGN: During a 12-month period, ED visits for 3981 homeless Veterans enrolled in (1) H-PACT at 20…

  • Reducing Time-dependent Bias in Estimates of the Attributable Cost of Health Care–associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections

    Richard E Nelson, Matthew H Samore et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•Referencias: 25

BACKGROUND: Previous estimates of the excess costs due to health care-associated infection (HAI) have scarcely addressed the issue of time-dependent bias. OBJECTIVE: We examined time-dependent bias by estimating the health care costs attributable to an HAI due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) using a unique dataset in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that makes it possible to distinguish between costs that occurred bef…

  • Chronic Multisymptom Illness Among Female Veterans Deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan

    April F Mohanty, Anusha Muthukutty et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•Referencias: 30

BACKGROUND: Chronic multisymptom illness (CMI) may be more prevalent among female Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) deployed Veterans due to deployment-related experiences. OBJECTIVES: To investigate CMI-related diagnoses among female OEF/OIF/OND Veterans. RESEARCH DESIGN: We estimated the prevalence of the International Classification of Disease-9th edition-Clinical Modification coded CMI-related…

Open Access•Man Hung, Marjorie Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2012

  • A Simulation-Based Evaluation of Methods to Estimate the Impact of an Adverse Event on Hospital Length of Stay

    Matthew H Samore, Shuying Shen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2007•Referencias: 48

INTRODUCTION: We used agent-based simulation to examine the problem of time-varying confounding when estimating the effect of an adverse event on hospital length of stay. Conventional analytic methods were compared with inverse probability weighting (IPW). METHODS: A cohort of hospitalized patients, at risk for experiencing an adverse event, was simulated. Synthetic individuals were assigned a severity of illness score on admission. The score var…

  • Developing Indicators of Inpatient Adverse Drug Events Through Nonlinear Analysis Using Administrative Data

    Jonathan R Nebeker, Paul R Yarnold et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2007•Referencias: 21

BACKGROUND: Because of uniform availability, hospital administrative data are appealing for surveillance of adverse drug events (ADEs). Expert-generated surveillance rules that rely on the presence of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes have limited accuracy. Rules based on nonlinear associations among all types of available administrative data may be more accurate. OBJECTIVES: By applying…

  • Out-of-Pocket Pharmacy Expenditures for Veterans Under Medicare Part D

    Randall Rupper, Randall W Rupper et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2007•Referencias: 9

OBJECTIVES: Because the VA pharmacy benefit is deemed equivalent coverage to Medicare Part D, veterans can use either or both of these Federal benefits. We sought to determine how these programs' different benefit structures and low-income assistance thresholds would affect pharmacy out-of-pocket expenses for veterans. METHODS: We reviewed income and asset tests performed at the Salt Lake City VA in fiscal year 2005, and estimated the number of i…
