  • Relaxation Training for Psychiatric Inpatients

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, James B Collier et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1993

In Exp. 1 the effects of progressive and imaginal relaxation training were examined for 51 psychiatric inpatients. Relaxation Inventory scores indicated significant changes in the direction of greater relaxation for each training procedure; there were no significant differences in responses to the two types of training. Significant relaxation effects were found for each of three training sessions, but the effects were not cumulative. Only one pat…

  • Comparison of Three Intellectual Screening Tests in a Rehabilitation Setting

    Open Access•R Michael O'Bannon, Henry C Rickard•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1982

Scores from three brief intellectual screening instruments were compared with WAIS IQs. The Quick Test, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, the Revised Beta, and the WAIS were administered to 70 clients of a vocational rehabilitation center. All IQ estimates from the brief measures correlated highly with WAIS IQs. The Quick Test and the Peabody significantly underestimated the WAIS Verbal IQ. No differences were found between any of the brief me…

  • Academic Contracting with Emotionally Disturbed Children

    Open Access•Nancy Campbell-Goymer, Henry C Rickard•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

16 underachieving boys contracted for early dismissal from the classroom contingent upon completion of programmed materials. Data support the use of contingency management to increase academic performance. Inappropriate behavior was exhibited less during periods in which academic performance was reinforced

  • Development of a Generalized Signal Controlling Noise Level

    Open Access•George Taylor, G E Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

  • Self-Reports of Group Cohesion under High and Low Cooperation

    Open Access•D Glenn Pack, Henry C Rickard•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

  • Generalization of Stimulus Control in a Summer Camp

    Open Access•George Taylor, G E Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

A manual signal was used to demonstrate stimulus control of noise level in a summer camp for 57 behaviorally disturbed children. The stability of control over time and the generalization of control to novel situations and signalers were examined

  • Model's Competency, Vicarious Reinforcement, and Subject's Strategy in Imitative Performance

    Open Access•A J Finch, Annette Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

  • Trial, error, and the obvious

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, Jerry L Hart•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1973•Referencias: 7

  • Weight reduction through successive contracts

Michael Dinoff, Henry C Rickard et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1972•Referencias: 9

Through ongoing improvement of contractual agreements, a 30-pound weight loss was obtained with a bright, emotionally disturbed 10-year-old boy. Contracts, specifying goals and rewards, were rewritten after each loss of ten pounds. The weight loss, accomplished over seven weeks, suggests that the contracts were able to reverse his increasing obesity

  • Personality Variables and Sexual Status in Observer Performance

    Open Access•Kaye Finch, Henry C Rickard et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

Four groups of 15 Ss each heard words recorded by a male or female model and intermittently said words of their own in response. 15 male and 15 female Ss were exposed to each model. All Ss took the MMPI, the EPFS, and a postural sway test. There was a significant increase in the critical response class, animal words, as the frequency of animal words spoken by the taped models increased ( p < .001). Male Ss gave significantly more imitative respon…

  • Reliability of Word-Modeling Performance

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, Michael Holt et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

Kanfer and Marston ( I ) , utilizing an intercommunication system of earphones and a tape recorder, have introduced a versatile, methodological approach to the study of imitative verbal performance. S is instructed to say words intermittently in response to a series of tape recorded words spoken by a model ( M ) ; M emits an increasing frequency of a pre-selected response class, e.g., names of animals, across blocks of trials. In such an experime…

  • Effects of Contingent and Noncontingent Token Reinforcement upon Classroom Performance

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, Carl B Clements et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

5 boys attending a therapeutic summer camp were exposed to 1 1⁄2 hr. of programmed instruction in mathematics per day for 28 days. Following an 8-day baseline period during which no tokens were given, the awarding of tokens was made contingent upon classroom productivity. After 10 days of contingent reinforcement, Ss received noncontingent tokens for 3 days after which for 7 days tokens were again contingent upon classroom performance. The token-…

  • Subject-model sexual status and verbal imitative performance in kindergarten children

    Henry C Rickard, Norman R Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1970•Citada por: 1

  • Effects of Token Reinforcement in a Therapeutic Camp

Open Access•Rex Forehand, Tom Mulhern et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Token reinforcement was employed as a behavior modification technique in a therapeutic camping environment. The results suggest that token reinforcement can affect crying and aggressive behavior

  • Note on Recorded vs “Actual” Model Behavior and Observer Performance

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, David L Willard•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

The effects of instructions that the model ( M) in the adjacent room was a taped voice as opposed to instructions that the unseen M was an “actual” person were explored. The finding that Ss respond at least as well to the former instructions suggests the parsimonious procedure of informing Ss that the M is, indeed, a recorded voice

  • Ingroup versus Outgroup Choices of Strategy Made by Boys Playing a Non-Zero-Sum Game

    Open Access•Warner Wilson, W Stephen Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

32 boys attending a therapeutic camp for emotionally disturbed children played a modified Prisoner's Dilemma game, 2 teams playing on each occasion. Ss choose a competitive or cooperative strategy toward both opponents and partners for 45 trials. Partners received more cooperation than opponents ( p < .001). This result successfully replicated earlier findings. on the other hand, post-ratings on several types of traits failed to distinguish betwe…

  • Model Similarity and Observer Learning

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, Kennon A Lattal•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

During Phase I 5 groups of 9 Ss each were instructed to say words at a signal to obtain a baseline of animal responses. 4 of the groups then said words intermittently with a taped model during Phase II. Two groups were exposed to a “normal” model and two groups were exposed to a “retardate” model. Half of the Ss under each taped condition received vicarious reinforcement, i.e., hearing “good” from an E when the model gave a critical response. Hal…

  • A Follow-up Note on “Verbal Manipulation in a Psychotherapeutic Relationship”

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, Michael Dinoff•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1962

This note is a 2-yr. follow-up on the manipulation of delusional verbalizations in a 62-yr.-old male (Rickard, Dignam, & Hornet, 1960).' The original experiment consisted of two parts. (1) Using social reinforcement, El conditioned rational speech from an extremely low to a high level of occurrence. Rational speech decreased sharply when a lower partial reinforcement schedule was attempted. (2) E2 and E3 exposed S to alternating 10-min. periods o…

  • Manipulating Verbal Behavior in Groups

    Open Access•Henry C Rickard, Edwin O Timmons•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1961

Verbal conditioning, beginning wich Greenspoon ( 195O), has become well established as an area of investigation (Krasner, 1958; Salzinger, 1959). Cenual to verbal conditioning is the concept of reinforcement, defined as an event following a response which alters the strength of that response. Following a response, interventions such as good, urn-hum, etc. have been established empirically as reinforcers. The effect of an intervention (question) d…
