Islamic and Pre-Islamic Glass from Nippur
Excavation of Area WG at Nippur in 1989 yielded a large corpus of glass ranging in date from late Parthian to Islamic, mainly Abbasid. Wadi Hammamat
The Wadi Hammamat 25° 58′–26° 35′ N, 33° 32′–33° 35′ E cleaves through the mountains of the Egyptian EASTERN DESERT at the central and narrowest part of the shortest route from the Nile at Quft (Coptos) to the Red Sea at Quseir (ancient Myos Hormos); it has channeled interregional traffic for some five thousand years.
Coptos
Coptos (Koptos; ancient Gebtiw; modern Quft, Qift, or Qeft) lies on the Nile's east bank, 38 km north of Luxor. It was the capital of the Fifth Nome (Two Falcons) at least as early as the 6th Dynasty (Adams 1997: 1). Min was Coptos' patron god and the majority of information concerning the area comes from excavations at his temple.
